Might be a stupid question, but I'm not 100% sure on how to make backups of my computer, and which programs are good etc. Also will it just backup the operating system itsself, or all my programs and setting also?

Another recommendation for Macrium Reflect here too...Used it to do monthly OS backups (and the odd restore) with no issues.

In Macrium Reflect, you need to create a rescue disk. If you need to restore an image, boot from the recovery disk, and follow the prompts. It's fairly easy.. ;)

Another vote here for Macrium Reflect. It has worked very well for me with both Windows 8 and 7.

Thanks everyone, after all the recommendations for Macrium Reflect, I have decided to give it a try.

Please let us know how it went. I have it downloaded but am reluctant to test it. Right now, I'm still snakebit from my 2 1/2 month old HP computer failing to roll back with the recovery disks I made when I first got it.

With that said, I know I need something more dependable than the Recovery Disks and folks are recommending Macrium . . .

Macrium Reflect free is an excellent program, but beware of the Linux based restore disc. I have had problems accessing some images on external drives. It is much better to use a WinPE Macrium restore boot disc.

Check out this tutorial prepared by whs Imaging with free Macrium - Windows 7 Help Forums

whs has links to download a WinPE iso file you can burn on a CD. He has saved me a boatload time and problems!
