I hid a file on my desktop, cant figure out how to view it

OK, so I'm using a hp 2000, with windows 8 obviously. I wanted to try and hide a folder on my desktop for privacy, and to try it out I right clicked the folder and went to properties and clicked that, then I check-marked the hidden option.
Now after that I looked online for ways to view my hidden files on my computer, and followed the various instructions. I still can't find my folder. I did things like changed the options in viewing my computers files to show the hidden files.
Now I know for sure I hid the folder in my desktop, so how can I view it?
I would greatly appreciate your help.

Hello Animalcrackers, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If all you did was set the hidden attribute for the folder, then if you like, you could add the desktop context menu from the tutorial below to make it easy to toggle to show or hide hidden files/folders.
Otherwise, you could use Option One in the tutorial below to manually set Windows to show or hide hidden files as needed.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

I tried the first option you provided

I tried what you said, and it all worked, it showed the hidden files, just not the folder with my personal things in it. I'm completely stumped,
    Any ideas?

Sometimes the icon cache got corrupted and an icon on desktop goes off screen. However, if you open the desktop from the File Explorer it might show up.
Look at the screen shot below. Make sure the Folder Options set to show hidden files and open the desktop from Favorites to see if it shows up there.

K, I set those options, and yes it did show some hidden files, like two desktop.ini's and a Thumbs.db, but not my folder...

Have you tried doing a system restore to a time before you hid the folder?

In this case, your hard disk might get corrupted.
From the elevated command prompt, run chkdsk c: /r /f

Are you sure that you didn't delete or move the folder to another location by mistake?

While you have the hidden files/folders set to show (faded), do a search for the name of the folder on the hard drive you saved the folder on to see if it may find it.
