Windows 8 Wake Up Issues?

    Windows 8 Wake Up Issues?

It has been two months since I first installed Windows 8 (new build), and I am down to 1-2 remaining issues. One is that about 1 minute after the computer, or monitor, or ?? wakes up from sitting there running but with the monitor screen dark, the screen flickers or goes black for a second or so. When I move the mouse or touch the keyboard the monitor screen comes on as it normally should in a couple of seconds. However, after about a minute of operating normally, the screen flickers or goes black for a second or so. It is fine after that, until it (the monitor?) goes to sleep again.

I'm thinking it has something to do with power management, but no idea if it is a BIOS setting, or Windows 8 setting, or what? Any thoughts on where to start looking? Obviously this is not a critical issue, but is kind of annoying.

    Hello Ron,

Is this only happening after the computer sits idle for 1-2 minutes without activity from you?

If so, then here's a couple of things to check to see if they may be the issue:

    1) Check to see if you may have Windows set to turn off your displays after a 1-2 minutes of being idle.
    2) Check to see if you may have the "Blank" screen saver set to run after 1-2 minutes wait time. Selecting "(None)" for the screen saver will turn it off if on.
    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Shawn, I will check into that, but the issue is kind of the reverse. The screen flashes about 1-2 minutes after I wake it up and start using it.

That's fine. If either one of those are turned on, then that's what would happen if they were set to turn off the screen after 1-2 minutes without activity by you.

I've checked my Power Options, and I am currently configured for High Performance. The Display is set to turn off after 15 minutes. And, Sleep mode is configured to Never.

The Screen Saver is already set to (None), so that would seem not to be the problem either...

Hmm, ok. Do you have all of the latest device drivers and Windows Updates installed?

Yes, I updated the motherboard BIOS to the latest version from Asus. I updated the graphics card to the latest driver available from AMD. It is later than the one by the graphics card manufacturer, HIS. Nothing changed when I updated these drivers.

All Windows updates installed except for optional Bing stuff.

I also checked my BIOS, and the EPU Power Saving Mode is Disabled. I checked the Catalyst Control Center, and couldn't see anything amiss there either. Seems to just reflect what was set in Windows Power settings.

Are you using Windows Power Management or an ASUS Power Manger. If ASUS, there should be an option to "Let Windows manage my power management plan." If applicable, you could try and switch to see if that fixes your issue.

I believe Asus calls their system EPU. In BIOS EPU is Disabled. When I check the EPU status with the Asus AI utility, it shows it is set for Performance, and I have reduced CO2 emissions by 0.000 mg since system startup 2 months ago. The only other two choices are Auto, and Maximum Power Savings. I take this to mean the EPU is not doing anything.

I believe in total the only energy saving function I have enabled is to shut the monitor down after 15 minutes of inactivity, and that is controlled by Windows.

    Hello again Ron,

I believe there may be more places to look than the specific BIOS setting you identified. For example, here is a description of the ASUS AI Suite II utility that can be installed in Window 8:

Now, if I were you, I'd be poking around in there to be 100% sure that Windows 8 is, in fact, handling all of my power management needs. Good luck.
