Greetings.
I have some 80 minutes CD-medias, that I want to fill with music for my car. But Windows media Player will only accept up to 74 minutes on each CD.
How do I get Media player to split my music-lists in 80 minutes instead of 74 minutes?

I just checked mine and WMP will allow 79:57 mins on an 80 min disc. the 43 seconds space is probably for disc overhead.

I tried it with Nero Burning ROM and it will allow about the same for an audio disc with wav files.

With Nero, on a CD with MP3 files (data files) I can get 700 Mb of data. I get a yellow warning if I add more. Probably the rest is reserved for overhead.

I've found CDBurnerXP to be excellent. When audio disc is selected it automatically converts mp3,flac etc.
It has a rudimentary label printing built in. The "XP" doesn't really mean limited to Windows XP. I've used it on XP, Vista and W7. This PC with W8 is new so I haven't tried it on 8 as yet.

I've used that, I stick with iTunes for Audio CDs though. I don't think they SELL 74 minute CD-R's anymore, I have three different spools here and they are all 80-minute. Maybe it you buy "Audio CDs" they are 74 minute, but I never do I just buy DATA cd's and they work for music fine.

If you can't get WMP to BURN the 80 minute CD, then maybe you can make a Bin+Cue image and burn it with IMGBURN, you would not be able to make an ISO image of any Audio CD, it has to be Bin+Cue- That's how I store some of my albums, I'll make Bin Cues where the ausio is one big 320 MP3 file, the Bin File then assembles the tracks as it is burning and the MP3 is converted to Audio Data.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
My media is 700MB 80 min Printable.
My problem with WMP is, that when I have made a "burn list", it puts only max 74 minutes on each CD. I have tried ImgBurn, and it says, that it is 80 minute CD, but I don't know how to get IMG-burn to make an audio-CD. I have only used it for data DVD's. I also don't know how to make an bin/cue in audioCD format, only in dataformat.

IMGburn will only burn an Audio CD from a Bin+Cue image of an Audio Disk.

You can actually create an image of an Audio CD with that program... I havent done it for a while, it will spit out Bin+Cue. I use an old version of Sonic Foundry CD Architect to create Bin Cues of my own audio CDs, Steinberg WAVELAB can also do it, and make the Cue sheet and even write trhe CD-Text.

That's why I like iTunes more than WMP for making disks, it writes CD-Text. Actually, I like to use WMP to Rip my disks, but iTunes to burn the disks or playlists.

I do not want to tell you to buy a Paid Program, but WAVElab had worked the best for me for making Audio CDs. You could also try Sony's Sound Forge CD Architect.

But as far as IMGburn goes, you can do anything those expensive programs can do, and WAY more:

Afterdawn is the best place for me at least to find solutions for Audio CDs or DVDs

Burn audio CDs from music files with ImgBurn - AfterDawn: Guides

I actually had that page bookmarked for a similar problem I had.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Discovered just now an error. When starting Windows Media Player it checks if there is a media in the burner, and if so, it can burn on that media, but that's it. On the top left corner it says "no disc (E:\)" but it burns it anyway. When CD1 is finished, it can't resume to CD2, because it does not "see" the new media I insert. I then have to stop WMP, restart WMP and now it can burn CD2 after I have recreated the burning list, and deleted CD1.

How to get WMP see a new media? Windows knows there is an empty media, IMGBurn know there is an empty media, WMP does NOT know it. What might the problem be?
Btw. after restarting WMP it found my media as a 80 minutes, and there is no problem with that. It is only about "seeing" the media after WMP is started!

How are you making these Disk Spanning Sets? Are you just trying to burn a Playlist? Try it in iTunes, it'll span the disks better. Also, while trying to Burn with WMP- Make sure you do not have any other Disk Burning programs running, else it will interfere with the way WMP is detecting the blank disk.

I don't know if this problem is strictly with WMP, it may be your Burner. Try blowing air while the tray is open, then use a regular CD-Cleaning Disk to clean the heads.

Also, you should check for a new Firmware Revision for the Drive:

The Firmware Page ? Index page

If your whole system is a Dell or HP etc, the Optical Drive Firmware updates can be downloaded from the Support Website for the system.

Anyway, try the Afterdawn tutorial for single-disk burning. Once you get the hang of it, you can make multiple disk jobs.

Ah, I get it, you just dragged some playlists over. I dragged my entire library over and it's over 55 disks!

Before you try to burn, make sure any and all other programs that even HAVE a burn function are OFF, including iTunes and close all Explorer windows as well, because Explorer has a Disk Burner.

Then make sure your Drive Tray is clean, spray Air through it.

And check this with other burning Programs, like iTunes, IMGburn and Even Explorer, because I just stuck a disk in my drive and WMP found it instantly. It could be an issue with your Burner.

Here is another Tutorial for using IMGburn to create Bin+Cues:

How To Use ImgBurn to Burn An Audio CD from MP3 Music Files | Next of Windows

Also, I use WMP or iTunes to burn Audio CDs in a pinch when I need em fast, but when I make Demo Disks for my Band, I always use some Professional Disk Burning Program, one that creates a Cue file, because when they want to make a Glass Master, they need that file for the absolute placement of Data.

To answer your original question:
Earlier Compact CD player only play 74' or 650mb media. More modern CD disk and most burnable media are 80' or 700mb.
So in order to play the audio CD for every device, the software will limit it to 74'.

EDIT: Certain software will allow to burn using full 80'. However, it only plays in your PC's or more modern CD Players, there's no guarantee it will play in every device.

It is ONLY WMP that can't see a new media when inserted AFTER WMP is started. If the media is inserted before WMP is started, it will make the burn-list fit to the acutally CD-size, in my case 80 minutes. But when I want to burn CD 2 from the Burn List, I have to close WMP, put the 2nd CD-media in, start WMP and then it can burn it.

IMG Burn can burn over and over and over again without the need for being shut down between burns, so my guess is, that it is a setting somewhere in Windows or in WMP that I have wrong.

That is absolutely correct! So keeping the total time to 74 minutes is not a bad idea. Some older Drives can read "Overburned" CDs and DVDs, but not a lot. Lite-OIns were the first to offer overburning ability, but they are cheap devices.

You can use UltraISO to squish a whole bunch mroe Data into a 700MB CD, I have a few ISO images that were somehow able to have almost a Gig of data on a 700mb disk. Dont ask me why they work but they do.

Have you downloaded the Updates for WMP from Windows update, if any? If your WMP is messed up, you would have to remove it from "Features", reboot, then re-add it.

It's under "Media Features". Also, do you have any special WMP Plugins, that you paid for? If so you may want to remove those and try again, if you can reinstall them later.

By "audio CD" I meant the disc type to burn in CDBurnerXP. Not the physical disc. If you select "data disc" then it just burns the audio files as files with no conversion. Yeah that "audio" disc thing was supposed to add to the artists' royalties or something . Nothing to do with the technical properties of the CD as far as I know. Maybe if there are published musicians here they can testify if they ever got the royalties. :)

I doubt it, since I have 3 records out and never saw once CENT in royalties, and I know they sold well. Vinyl AND CD Releases.

Actually, the concept of "Audio Disk" came about because of the Data Structure of an Audio CD, which is called Redbook Audio. Redbook Audio creates a File System that includes all Audio Modes from 44.1 KHz/16 bit all the way down to 8 kHz/4 Bits- Mono AND Stereo files. This is so that the Audio from the CD would be compatible with say, Players that had a Single Speaker.

Back in the days of Windows 98, you could download "CDFS.vxd" which would allow you to see the actual Data structure of an Audio CD, which is quite different than a Data disk. But there was an actual CDFS.sys file that was altered to show the actual root filesystem of a CD.

This guy here is actually looking for it:

WANTED! Original MS internal cdfs.sys Windows XP for show Audio CDA as wav files in the file structure - Leecher Mods -

The Disk is indexed by Bitrate from 44.1 down to 8, each Bitrate folder is split into 16, 8 and 4, and each 16.8 and 4 bit folder is split into Mono and Stereo. Inside of the Mono and Stereo folders reside the WAV files for each song at that particular Bitrate. You could even extract them by copying them with Explorer.
