Does "Sync Your Settings" also Sync File Associations?

Because I didn't think so, but now it seems maybe they do:

    Windows 8.1 .bat file glitched

The only thing I can think of is that this person was using an MS account and had Synced his Settings including File Associations, so that when he did a Fresh Install of Windows 8, and logged in with the MS account, it ruined his File Association. We've tried everything to set the association to default, but maybe the OS is resetting it to what it was when it was Synced.

Anyone concur? Because I never thought File Associations were being synced, if this is the case it would explain a few unsolvable problems that have cropped up lately.

    Hello Jon,

Nope. File associations are not synced. At least not on any of my systems.

I'm not so sure, It's the only explanation for that guy installing a brand new OS and his BAT files still not working.

If you look at the Sync Settings, it is curiously worded like this:

So, I'm thinking it may be included in the "And More" that is referred to at "File Explorer".

Think about it, why would a machine, which won't run a BAT file with the click, still not do it after having the OS completely replaced? Either Associations are Included and his system Synced the Bad Association, or there is a Hardware Error, something wrong with CPU or Memory.

I am gong to run some tests specifically to find out if this is true or not, I'll post my results here.

I'm not sure why he's continuing to have the issue either, but I've never had any of my file associations synced. I always have to set my image files to open with Windows Photo Viewer instead of the Photos app even with everything set to be synced.

As a test, he could turn off his sync settings completely, then use the tutorial below to restore the default .bat file associations to see if it continues to open with notepad.

Thats what I told him to do.

I am going to do a test right now, I'll create a bogus image file association for JPG ans then move to my other computer and see it it carries over.

Even if it was to sync your file associations, it still wouldn't prevent you from being able to change them when and as often as you like though. Something else is afoot here.

I have to do a Windows Update, and reboot both of my systems. I think you are right, but I've just trying this to make sure.

OK, that's it - File Associations, DO NOT get saved in Sync Settings. Usually, any synced setting gets transferred immediately to my other machines. After rebooting both machines, the association is only active on the machine I set it on.

I'll keep my eyes on it for a delayed reaction. If I get one, I'll post it.
