Windows 8 Won't Shutdown or Restart

Running Windows 8 Dev. Preview on a Dell Latitude D610 (1.73Ghz, 2GB). System Hibernates fine (my main mode of powering off) but will not properly shutdown or restart. Every time I hit shutdown/restart it goes to a black screen. I know that it's still running because the power light is still on and the hard drive light flashes just as if it were still in use. I've let it sit for 3 hours in this state and it still refuses to shut down. Any ideas?

I was having a similar problem - My would not restart only shutdown so I reload W7 and had same problem, After that
I load XP and format the HD and then reload W7 and W8 with dual boot and is all good now.

This is typically a symptom of a faulty driver in your system. Have you installed any custom drivers? Video cards, accessories, whatever..

If you haven't installed a custom driver, then try going out and getting the manufacturers driver, NVidia, AMD, Intel, etc..

Another potential problem is a buggy bios firmware. Check with your motherboard vendor to see if there are bios updates.

@ johnmpc94 and sargey. Please post what BIOS version each of you have. I think Mystere is onto something here.

Another option is to install Win 8 RTM in which it handles devices more smoothly though it will run for 3 months only ;)

Thanks, surgery. That shoots that theory. For you anyway. It may not be the case for the thread starter.

I'm glad you found this thread where others are helping. This is beyond my knowledge.

Just to be sure -> You found nothing in Control Panel -> Performance and Information Tools -> Advanced Tools and/or Events Log?

Sarg.

If it still doesn't work you may need to do a System Integrity Check By Shawn Brink.
Choose option two from the tutorial if you feel option one isn't your choice, then post back here

Hope that helps you. :)

Kevin.
