Hello

I have two Internal Hard disks in my system. First one is partitioned and used for system. i don't have problem on this hard disk. My second hard disk is 500 GB, and is not partitioned. I m using this drive for storing movies and music. The problem I faced is two of the folders are missing from this drive. THese two folders have several files. All other folders and files are intact. I just checked hard disk's used space and found to be 463 GB. I then selected all folders and viewed the combined spaces(including hidden and system folders) and I found it to be 389 GB only. Where are my these two folders? How can I retrieve it? Where is (463-389=74 GB) of space which is included in drive's "Used Space" metrics.

My Computer is running on Windows 8

Any help will highly be appreciated

Most likely, the missing space is Restore Points, which are kept in the hidden System Volume Information folder. This folder is typically only accessible to the SYSTEM user, so it will not get counted when you select all files and folders (even if you have hidden and system files visible), because your user has no access to the folder.

Open your start screen and start typing "restore" then in the search window choose Create A Restore Point. When that pops up, check to see if System Protection is enabled on that drive, and if so, view the properties and see how much disk is in use for it.

Thanks for answering my question.

The restore point is enabled for drive C: only which is in First Hard Disk.

Thanks

Apart from restore point being disable for that Disk. I did Thorough Disk Check using CHKDSK D: /f /x /r. No space is in bad sector.
Also I just realized, the free space is 2.22 GB, which is same as before I lost these two folders.

Thanks

Exploring that drive by other software such as Total Commander or Winrar to see if your lost folder was there

Are you sure the folder is lost? It's quite common that people accidentally click and drag a folder to another folder, which causes the folder to be "moved". Have you tried searching for the files you know are in that folder?

Yes I did try searching for the files that were in lost folder, didn't find it. The thing that is driving e nut is the space remaining in that hard disk is exactly the same that it was before missing those folders.

Did you search from the cmd prompt? Open Cmd prompt and from the root of your drive type "dir /s /ah filename.ext" where filename.ext is the name of the file you want to find.

Yes I tried with command prompt, I get "File Not Found" message. It didn't even find the file that I can clearly see in windows explorer.

Thanks

I used WizTree tool, This showed me that the contents of my first lost folder are in found.000 and contents of lost 2nd folder are in found.001 folder. I just know Found.*** are system folders and I m quite not sure how my files went there. Is there any way to recover these files, these system folders couldnot be accessed directly via Windows Explorer ("Gives Access Denied Error")

EDIT

WizTree Tool also allowed me to recover those files just by cut/paste

Thanks

Found.000 are folders that are created by Scandisk. When it scans the disk and it finds file that haven't been deleted, but are still not linked to any directory (probably due to a crash or disk corruption) it places them in folders like these. Odd that it is marking them as system folders though. Maybe it does this for security reasons, so that sensitive documents aren't accidentally shown to other users.
