Interesting: I just forced a defrag of C: from cmd and then ran defrag on Recovery and now it is 0% fragmented. Another Windows thing I guess....

EDIT: WRONG. I did another analyze and it says 16% fragmented. What a bummer.

I suggest to turn on scheduled optimization.
I have mine set for weekly.
You might want to set it for daily for about a week.

The recovery partition is for the exclusive use of the recovery system. It should not be modified in any way for any reason or it may not be able to serve it's intended purpose.

It shouldn't be fragmented to start with.

David Bailey, as I said, I had it set for weekly; the screen shot is when I was trying to optimize. I do not know why it is fragmented, I have never seen it before on any OS.

LMiller7, as I said above, I have never seen this on "any" OS before, it is a freq.

I just ran ChkDsk and there is not change.

By the way, it's usually a small partition and it's no used by the daily user so fragmentation is not an issue.

What can always be done is temporary assign a drive letter to it, manually defragment it and then analyse it again and remove the drive letter.

    That's basically it.
Got it some what fixed:

1. Added drive letter I:.
2. Went to I: > Explorer > Properties > Tools > Scan and found errors.
3. Ran sfc /scannow and it repaired some errors. Some errors were not repaired but I did not find anything in CBS.log except duplicate owners for some folders.
4. Ran optimize and got fragmentation down to 1%.
5. Removed the drive letter.

Running 2 above no longer finds any errors. I went through the operations a couple of more times but did not accomplish anything.

sorry meant to type ,
a slightly fragmented drive is not that big a deal anyway .

and this is my opinion only ,i do fine with mine and many other i have had ,and i rarely defrag ,and i know people who never do .
I work [as a hobby ] on other people computers ,and i never really noticed any difference after a defrag on theirs .

Defrag says Recovery is fragmented, but will not optimize????

Who cares? You don't use that partition on a daily basis, and only when reformatting your disk... I suppose you're probably just OCD and want everything to say 0%

I absolutely agree with L. Miller. What you are seeing will never cause you an issue so just ignore it. FYI, I just installed Win 8.1 RTM and it won't let me touch that recovery partition. I tried to Optimize it and it just won't do it so I'm leaving mine alone.
