Windows 8 not booting and refresh may have lost files

I have a brand new Asus laptop, bought it about 3 weeks ago.
After installing some windows updates I restarted the computer and it it would not boot.
Keep getting a quick error message 0xc0000001 and restarts.
I have tried booting into recovery and doing automatic repair, tried bootrec's /fixboot, /fixmbr, and /rebuildbcd and and get successfully completed but still does not boot in both secure and non-secure boot. I have done a refresh, which completes successfully, but still not booting. The USERS folder in c:\Windows.old does not show any users, even though when I click advanced options in recovery it asks to choose a login and enter a password. I have also checked the USERS folder at c: and :c\windows.
Remember I did a refresh and not a reset so my pics should still be their.
How can i recover my pics and fix the damn boot.

Thanks in advance.

A Refresh would delete any Programs that were installed to Program Files but it is supposed to save all of your Documents. Do you have any way to browse the contents of the drive? You would have to do it so it shows all hidden folders and files. I had heard a Refresh will save your Documents, I'm not sure about it saving images, and other people have complained about this.

How are you browsing the hard drive, through Safe Mode or some other means?

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Ubuntu may not show the whole NTFS filesystem, unless there is some program in there that can do it. A Command Prompt may not show hidden and system folders, try "Attrib *.* -r -a -s -h" in the Windows Old folder (Or is it Attrib -r -a -s -h *.*).

I use Mini XP to do it, that way I do not have to take the drive out and mount it into another system and I can look through the whole drive.

Exactly what does it do when you try to boot, does it give you a numbered error message that it can't find the System Files? If so, it's still not finding the Boot Loader. You can try changing the boot order if you have more than one drive.

But if you have only one drive in the machine, and that drive is partitioned with a recovery partition, it may be trying to boot to the recovery partition, and the Bootrec /Scanos may be returning only the Recovery partition, which is supposed to be a hidden partition.

If you try to install over this, the hidden partition will become the C drive and your system will become the D drive. I've had to delete recovery partitions because of this. Usually the first partition on a multiple partition hard drive will become the C drive regardless of if it is hidden or not, so you may be able to use Diskpart to assign drive C to the System Partition, but I've never been able to do that, someone else may know how to use Diskpart. I use Mini XP and then a Disk Partition program to set the Drive Letter on drives like that, Partition Wizard Home version 7.x will work in that environment, but not the latest version.

If you have a Disk Partitioning Program in the Ubuntu OS, you can try to set the system partition to Drive C and Active.

Yep, that's what I thought. The EFI partition has the system files in it, or are they in another partition? The Error means that it is trying to load a Drive as C which is not the system drive.

On a system with multiple HDDs, it is easy enough to make the System Drive be the default drive. But where a Drive has multiple partitions, the system partition MUST be the first partition on the disk. With Windows 7 sometimes there is a 100mb partition at the end of the drive, in Windows 8 this is something like 350mb- When it shows up. But on all of the systems I upgraded to 8, that 100MB partition was deleted. I had one of those partitions on this very machine and now it's gone.

On Laptops with one hard drive and a recovery partition, the only way I have been able to get it to boot was to get rid of the recovery partition. [DEL]You probably can't do this because it is a consumers machine. [/DEL]But it is still the only working solution I have found, and I've tried everything.

There may be a Tutorial here on how to set up a drive with Multiple Partitions so that the System partition is recognized as C, I'll have to look through the tutorials and see what's there.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I have the following partitions EFI, recovery , OS (win8) and restore.
My system partition is efi according to diskpart.
I made sure to assign a letter to EFI to rebuild the BCD.

The System partition should be OS. Your system is identifying EFI as System. Can you do without it? Recovery would have to be deleted too. OS needs to be the first partition on the drive, if there were a way to physically MOVE these partitions, you can try Partition Wizard Home, you will need a second drive. Clone the OS partition to the first slot, then clone the other partitions one by one to a place AFTER the OS partition. I have done this once or twice, but never in 8.

This may be the only solution. just have to find a way to implement it.

I think there is a way to make a boot CD with Partition Wizard Home- Ah. no there is not, it is not a free solution, you have to buy the Boot Disk from them. So yo would have to install Partition Wizard Home to a Windows Boot Environment like WinPE or WinRE if that can be done. Hiren's has Mini-XP, I've used that. There may be a free solution somewhere, I'll try to find one. You need a boot disk that can run the cloning process.

BCDedit should create a bootloader in the EFI partition from which points to the OS partition. But you say it is not working for you? Or it is working but not pointing to the right partition.

I've had to get very creative when recovering multi partition drives. Unfortunately, the most powerful cloning programs are paid only - Paragon, Acronis, etc. Seagate has a free version of Acronis that can be used for Seagate Drives.

This issue was discussed at length here:
