Microsoft .NET 3.5 Framework - Where is it?

I have a windows 8 laptop and there is software that I need to install that requires that I already have Microsoft .NET 3.5 Framework. However, how do I determine if I have it on my laptop? I tried the instructions for Start, regedit, etc. and also looked in Control Panel, Program Features, but didn't see anything that was obvious.

Mostly all legitimate programs that require .net 3.5 will recognize if you do not have it and prompt you to "click OK" to install it. Once done, that insatller will fetch it and install it for you. I would just start the installer and see what happens. Good luck.

It's a'll built in to Windows 8 Except for dot net 2.0 - As it shows in TopGun's image.

You cannot install it outside of Windows 8, and it gets installed and set up during a fresh install. You can add or remove parts of it using Windows Features, but if you de-select it then re-select it, it will only mark the main parts of it for install. Also, if you are upgrading Windows XP or 7 and any of your Dot Net's are fouled up, it will transfer that foul up straight over into 8. So before you upgrade, use the Dot Net repair tool and make sure it's all working right.

The Biggest Culprit is Steam, which uses not only Dot net 4 or 4.5, but also Direct X 10. If your Steam is not working in 7, it will not work in 8 either.

This is incorrect. Windows 8 does not install Netframework 3.5 automatically.
In addition to what My2Cents's post above:
    1. 3rd party software that require the net framework will either install it or prompt you to install it
For example: Nero Burning software, Object Dock from stardock...
    2. You can install it by turning on the Program Software Features.
    3. In some case, you'll get an error installing it (Error code 0x800f0906, 0x800F081F) then you can use DISM command line to install from the installation disk:
      DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All /LimitAccess /Source:X:\sources\sxs

Where X is the drive letter of the installation disk

You can point it to an extracted ISO file as well, same path. (\sources\...)

Sorry, but on every fresh install I have done, it did install. The Programs I have that require it, did not install it and they worked. Also, I tried installing the package manually and I got a message that said that it could only be installed or removed via the Features. Maybe some version of Windows 8 you worked with did not have it turned on, but it is still there in the Features section and I'll bet the Installer did not work and you got a similar message. This is Three machines I've seen that message on. But I have never had to install it or add it from the Features because it was already there and selected.

Actually my version of 8 also has 2.0 and 3.0 added to the 3.5 pack: This is exactly how it looked from day one on installing 8. Yours is the same way, so I was wrong about having to add 2.0 manually.

And it was installed from day one. I just checked my other system, and it is the same way. Both Windows 8 Pro, the other machine has Media Center.

Maybe what you mean is that it was not installed on your system, you added it later. But it cannot be installed by downloading the installer and trying to install it that way, 3 machines I tried this on refused, that was when I discovered it was already there. I always install Dot Net 2 and 3 on machines just after a fresh installation of Windows 7, that's what I was trying to do when I discovered it was already there.

I've never had to do that, but I'll bookmark the page.

In fact, maybe the first time I used a program that required it, it may have been installed then, but I don't remember it- I've never seen that Popup Window, the next time I do an fresh 8 install, I'll check it and see if it was installed or not.

I wanted to see once and for all, if I was totally mistaken about this, but I am on my Dell Precision 370, which is a fresh install I did about 2 months ago for Testing. I've never tried to install any Dot Net 3.5 and below, this is what it was by default:

But I have one Program which requires Dot Net 2, it never asked me about installing any prerequisites, it just went in. Perhaps it installed the needed prerequisite automatically.
