Black square ---> Neutral ----> was not installed by default.

Yes, some software will silently install the needed components.

I took the "Gray" (Smaller Black Square) to mean that not all of the selections in that Feature were installed, for it to be totally non installed, it has to be completely blank. Thats what it did when I removed Hyper-V.

For instance, my Dot Net 4 Feature is the same "Neutral" Square, but I KNOW that it is installed. It's the same way on the rest of my machines.

Insert windows installation disc or flash drive, disconnect internet, and run this command on elevated command prompt:
    Code:
    dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFX3 /Source:x:\sources\sxs
Where "x" is the installation drive letter.

    Good luck!

Yah but as I was saying, this should not need to be done, 2 fresh installs and one upgrade put Dot net 3 in there and working. I take the half-black button as "Installed" rather than "Not Installed"

.NET 3.5 is built upon the .NET 2.0 framework runtime (as is .net 3.0). .NET 4.0, 4.5, and the about to be released 4.5.1 are all based on the 4.0 framework runtime. So when you install .NET 3.5, you also get 3.0 and 2.0. In other words, 3.5 requires 2.0 to work.

The black square means "intermediate" state (not fully cleared and not fully selected), which means that not all of the selections in the category below are selected, but some are. (you'll notice it only applies to sections that have a + sign next to them to expand)

You can install .net 3.5 from the Windows Features dialog, or by using dism from a command line. Either is fine. .net 3.5 is not installed by default with Windows 8. Some apps are smart enough to use dism to install it.

That may be true, about some program installers using DISM, but two fresh installs and one upgrade were in the "Intermediate" state after installing. Also a brand new Laptop I ordered. And I know that the two programs I use that need it are not that sophisticated, they do not use DISM in the installer, old programs (ie, dot net 3 was new for the version of the program I use).
