Computer time keeps jumping forward

Windows 8 Pro x64.

For reasons I can't explain, the time on my computer keeps randomly jumping forward, usually several times a day, in 10-30 minute increments. I go in and re-sync it to the internet time servers each time I notice, but it just changes randomly again a little bit later. The time.windows.com server usually returns the message "An error occurred while Windows was synchronizing with time.windows.com. This operation returned because the timeout period expired.", the other servers sometimes the same, sometimes no problem. The other computers on my network don't seem to have any problems.

How can I stop this happening?

Is it laptop or a desktop? You could try replacing the CMOS battery, if it's a laptop, the battery may be soldered, Desktops have user serviceable CMOS battery and easily replaceable.

It's a desktop. Why would changing the battery help though? The computer is on the entire time when it jumps forward. I can currently not sync with any of the servers listed in Windows 8, which to me can't be normal.

CMOS battery failure is one of the causes for the symptoms you described, are you overclocking? O/C may destabilise the system as well.

In addition to Brummyfan's suggestion, you might also want to verify that you do not have a DNS lookup issue. I just tested all the inherent time servers and I got a positive response from every one of them. See the attached and open an elevated command prompt to confirm you do not have a DNS routing issue:

my2cents - I ran the commands as above and don't appear to have any issues. I will try them again immediately after I get the failure message however.
brummyfan - I am overclocking yes, but I have been for the 3 years I have owned this computer without issue. The computer was in storage for a couple of months whilst I moved house and started it when I set it up again.

Thank you for your help (and for linking me to the other post), I will first have a look in BIOS, and then try replacing the battery (with the power off!). I'll report back here once I've tried.
