Where does the link or icon go?

In Windows 8 when I make Firefox or Chrome (as an example) small down to the Task Bar the Icon then disappears. In the former Windows the Icon always stayed in the Task Bar.

So if I try to open either of the two programs listed above it opens a NEW instance, not the one that I moments ago had made smaller and placed in the Task Bar.

So how do I retrieve the former program that has now disappeared to where ever. I sure hope this makes sense!

not sure I fully understand ,but sort of sound to me like you should maybe using bookmarks to keep shortcuts to pages you want to review over and over .,sorry if im not getting what you mean

Also, check to see if you have more than one row of tasks on your taskbar. There will be a down arrow over to the right, before the Tray.
