So I was trying to install a program which required I delete a single item from the wow6432node but I accidentally tried to delete the entire folder from the registry.

Now my computer starts with a bunch of weird symbols on thee screen and I cannot sign in.

I have tried staring while holding f8 to get into safe mode with no luck.

What are my options here? Even if I can get to system recovery somehow, I know I have not created any system restore points.

Thank you so much in advance to anyone who can help!

Hello Awrontherise, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you had system protection turned on, then it'll be worth a try to do a system restore at boot to see if you may have a restore point available dated before this mistake was made.

If not, then you could try to refresh Windows 8 at boot to not lose to much.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Do I need to insert a usb drive or disk with some windows recovery files on it to get to system recovery?

My laptop came with windows 8 installed and I do not have a disk that came with it.

I am on my wife's laptop now, so I could download whatever is needed.

In that case, you may be looking at having to do a factory recovery to restore Windows 8. :(

What brand and model is your laptop?

Now I have tried holding the power button to shut down and pressing the power button to turn it back on while holding shift, again holding f8, again holding shift and f8.

It seems there is now way to get to any system restore options.

So I'm guessing I need some usb flash drive or cd-r inserted when starting my laptop to get to somewhere where I can run system recovery?

If this is the case can I make this disk one my wife's windows 7 32 bit laptop even though my laptop is 64 bit and runs windows 8?

If you had not successfully rebooted, there may have been an option to replace that part of the registry from the backup.

I don't know if Brink has a tutorial on it, but the files are located in C: \Windows\System32\config\RegBack folder. In Windows 7 we would have just let the "Last Known Good" repair option replace the files for us.

If there isn't a tutorial, I would have to check the procedure for replacing the files and which one might be needed. If you have rebooted, those files were renewed after the situation occurred and would now have the same problem.

Edit: It doesn't appear the Registry information in the Keys involved HKR can be replaced, so it probably would not make a difference in this instance.

Good news Awrontherise,

If you are able to get the 64-bit Windows 8 USB/DVD created, then you should be able to boot from it to be able to do a system restore to undo what you did.

I have a Toshiba Satellite C855 64 bit running windows 8 and cannot find the product key on the computer or with the packaging.

My wife's computer is actually 64 bit, I did not realize, and runs windows 7.

I still cannot create a bootable disk without the product key.

I have included pictures of the only two screens I can get to on my laptop.

Am I going to have to purchase a whole new version of windows and start all over again?

I found this below that may allow you to recover Windows 8 at boot.

From: Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5320 recovery help! - TOSHIBA FORUMS

To restore your laptop back to it's "ORIGINAL FACTORY SPECS" you must 1st access "Boot Options" on your Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5320, or similar model & here's what worked for me. Start the laptop while tapping the "F12" key. This will open your boot options menu. At the very bottom of the list is an option called "HDD Recover"...click on it if you want to be able to access your "Advance System Recovery Options" where you'll be given new options allowing you to restore your laptop back to it's original factory specs.

No. Very few program benefit from being 64 bit, and the vast majority of them will work fine in either environment. What's more, there are still plenty of 32 bit computers, even brand new ones.
