    random screen freeze up

O.K. in Windows 7 if my screen froze up i had no control over mouse or keyboard i pushed control alt and delete was able to go to log in screen, either restart, shutdown or use task manager close a program might be giving me this issue. It seems for me in Windows 8 this does not work anymore, causing me to unplug power on PC which can cause bad sectors to increase on HDD.Does someone know how to do this without having to shutdown improperly like i do?

If Ctrl-Alt-Del or Alt-Tab DO NOT work, then your system is locked up, even if your Mouse is moving around. You will have to force a reboot, and then find out what is causing the system to lock up.

check event viewer[right click on the start icon lower left of monitor ] for details on what might be causing the lockups

this was occasional not a lot,it could of been a program that i used caused it at the time. When it did my mouse was not working and tried control+alt+delete did not work, never tried alt-tab,never knew about that one.I just do not want to have to unlug power as it can have bad effects to hard drive after doing it number of times over time period.I did try control+ alt+delete afterwards did work, just not at time of freeze up.I will look into it.ty

You can also get to what Caperjack says by using the Windows Key + X combo.
