Program disappears when selecting "Open" to open

I have a very frustrating issue with Windows 8 where my software disappears when I select to open an existing file from within the parent program. It is not minimized and it is not 'off' the screen. I open task manager, and it doesn't exist as a process in any state. The program is Xilinx's ISE for programming FPGA boards. Before, I get the obvious response that it is an issue with the ISE gui and not Windows 8, I've had a similar problem in another program in Windows 8 in which when I tried to create a new folder in a select file dialog box to save a file, the program would disappear. (Though, I don't recall which program that was.) It's as the program closes completely! I really need a fix for this one! Thx. (I'm lovin' Linux even more now.)

Can you still access the main program using it's main EXE file?

If it worked in Windows 7, you may want to set the compatibility to Windows 7. Also, if it is a 16 bit module and you have it in a 64 bit system, it will never work, unless you use M.A.M.E.:

The program is instantiated through a batch file, and it is for a 64 bit system. Though, I didn't think about the possibility of Win8 having a Win7 compatibility setting for software. I'll have to figure out how to do that. (I recently installed the software on Windows 8. I've never used it on earlier versions of Windows.) Thx for your quick reply.

You right-click on the EXE file and use Properties to set the Compatibility. The program is supposed to be able to run in 64 bit? Make sure it is in the Program Files (x86) folder, not the regular folder. I don't know how to check if an executable is 32 or 64.
