Solved "My Computer/Properties" causes Desktop to Reload

Just as it says, if I right click on "Properties" in My Computer and try to pull up the System Information sheet, the whole desktop shuts down and then re-opens.

I am running an AMD Athlon 4400+, overclocked 7%. I am going to set it back to 5% and see if this continues.

Open the command prompt. Copy and paste the following:

to see if you get the same behavior.

My Activation Status was causing it, I guess that command refreshed it.


Hm, it still closes when I run it from "My ComPuker" - I made that command into a Batch file, I'll run it like that from now on.

You don't need to create a batch file, just create a shortcut or use the attachment below.

That was the first step to isolate the problem. We need to investigate a little more. The problem may be with the "right click" and often caused by the "Shell Extensions" incompatibility.

Did lowering the overclock help? Hardware errors are often subtle.. The problem could be the result of some diagnostic performed..

Yes, you may have worked around the problem, but the problem is still there, and likely it's just a symptom of a different problem that may bite you harder next time it shows up. An APIC error is pretty severe and could cause all kinds of data corruption in your system if it starts happening in other places.

Setting the clock back down to 5% stopped that error message from showing up in the System Event log, but the System Info still crashes the desktop when I access it from My Computer. The batch file works fine, I downloaded the zip file I'll check that out. I only use System Info to get to advanced properties.
