The front panel cable usually has 2 plugs. 1 marked as "AC97" and the other as "HD Audio". Which plug did you use ?. HD Audio is the one you should use. If using the wrong, you might do some damage to the MB.

You can also try to download the latest driver from Realtek

-> I have an up-to-date hardware/software PC and it uses an old stereo analog speaker setup from way-back. I use the 2+(sub-woofer) channel speaker set-up with my current PC and it has worked fine with the ASUS MB RealTek HD Audio Controller and Driver files downloaded from ASUS.
-> A few days ago, I used an old AC97 AAFP cable I had to power a front panel Headphone jack. Technically, I guess the Headphone jack is a sound-out port.
-> After I hooked the cable up, checked the BIOS for an AC97 setting and not HD, and listened to the headphones, they sounded terrible; no presence.
-> I then plugged my two+ speaker system (with sub-woofer support combo) single input wire into the proper rear audio port on the sound panel in order to listen to what the speaker sound from that audio port was like. It was working fine. Just for fun, I then went about trying to uninstall the old and install the latest ASUS Realtek audio files on the PC.

-> As you can see from above, I had problems trying to uninstall the older ASUS/RealTek drivers and install new Audio driver package from ASUS.
-> I have to ask myself, what made the existing RealTek Audio files refuse to be un-installed. W8 has always installed and removed programs effortlessly.
-> I then had to ask, why the problem with the latest ASUS\Realtek Audio files that I can Not install them; because when I run the setup.exe files (as an Administrator) I get a message, "Setup.exe is not working now". So, that error message an software setup failure is a present and real problem.

- As I was checking around the system to see why I was having problems with a system program's "setup.exe" install, I wandered into the Date Execution Protection (DEP) within the Control Panel. DEP as software is NOT turned on, and the DEP interface does not display that my Intel I5-3570K processor supports DEP, which it should. DEP is completely "grayed-out". I can find no way to enable it as yet. I have GOOGLE searched and used MS Support web-based help with no results as yet. I even tried to enter a command to enable DEP using an elevated or Administrators Command Prompt. The Command window stated the operation was successful, but after restarting the PC, the DEP was still un-abled and still grey-out.

So, some thing(s) (?) is not working as it should; I just do not know at this moment what that might be.... :geek:

See if you can extract the audio files from the 'Setup.exe" if they are not already sitting there in a folder. Sometimes the SETUP file is a CAB or RAR file that you can extract with WinRAR.

If you can do that, then you can install the drivers manually by right clicking on the device and "update driver" then locate the extracted files with the "have Disk" browser.

If the setup won't run, it may be designed for Windows Vista/7, but the drivers themselves will still work, if you can add them manually. I've done this with countless drivers that were designed for Windows Vista, and I stuck them into 7. I've also installed divers meant for 7 into 8, it's not that different than 7 in a lot of ways..

When the current Audio 'file' for the ASUS MB was downloaded, it was in a .zip format. I used W8 File Explorer to 'extract' the compressed files into a empty folder.
>"Sometimes the SETUP file is a CAB or RAR file that you can extract with WinRAR"

Are you saying that the primary setup.exe file, "AsusSet.up.exe, may itself be a compressed file container that may also need to be opened by extraction...? I will try that this afternoon and see what happens. thanks

If it is a large file,. it may be. You never know until you try to extract it.

Install WinRAR, and associate it with everything but ISO and JAR files, and set up all of the context menu items as well.

Then, locate the setup file. Right click on it, and look for WinRAR, see it if has an option for "Open with WinRAR" and if it does, do it. Then extract the files to a folder and try updating the driver from "Browse Location"

BFB REPLY. thank you, but it was not the problem.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I authored this thread, but it is Mis-Directed.
the issue is not about the problematic installation of audio drivers;
but the loss of using and executing any "SETUP.EXE" file.
my apologies

thank you

My Bad, you probably have a virus. Sirefef has been making a big comeback

Run this tool, it is not a SETUP, if you have Sirefef it will take out the main body of the virus, but you still have to run an AV to get rid of the rest of it:

How do I remove Sirefef (ZeroAccess) trojan? - ESET Knowledgebase

Sirefef hijacks Defender, which in turn will block all SETUP.exe files because you can install an Antivirus usign Setup.exe.

Try renaming some of the Setup.exe files to something else and see if they run.
