My son has been using the computer, Dell 660, i5 system. It seems very slow to start to load and then comes up with the following error messages:
LaunchTM.exe Application Error
Consent.exe Application Error
mcagent.exe Application Error
rundll32.exe Application Error
wermgr.exe Application Error
mcupdates.exe Application Error
Taskhost.exe Application Error
explorer.exe Application Error
LaunchTM.exe Application Error

These are the errors that have occurred over the several times I have had to hard restart it since I can not shut it down normally. I have never been able to get into the desktop or any of the system applications. The only change was adding a video card, PowerColor AX7750 1GBK3-H Radeon HD 7750 1GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card, which had been working perfectly for a week.

Any thoughts or idea's....right now this new computer of less than 1 month is toast.

Thanks!

Have you tried pulling out the GPU and seeing if it will boot up normally?

My guess would be a power issue, that being not enough power is being supplied to the new GPU installed do to the stock PSU isntalled. Looking at PowerColor sites for that model GPU, it requires a minimum of a 400 watt PSU. Seeing as this PC is a retail Dell, and with out the service tag number I can't get the original system specs I can't determine what wattage PSU yours has, I would almost bet it's a PSU under power issue.

Since you say its been working for a week before the trouble started, makes me wonder. I would recheck the GPU to make sure it's fully seated and in the correct PCIe slot, then check to make sure that the power connections to the GPU are fully seated. Then make sure you have the latest driver installed which should be 13.9 from AMD.

Some of those "Programs" sound like viruses. "LaunchTM.exe" is something that loads Task Manager at Startup. Dont see why anyone would need this, just put Task Manager in the Startup items.

As far as "Consent" well this was something in Vista, seems like Viruses have appropriated it to spread Virii.

consent.exe file information. What is consent.exe?

I would do a full Virus Scam and not with Mcafee. Take that out and install Eset NOD32, you can run it for 7 days as a trial.

Then search for Eset Sirefef Removal tool and run that.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I am unable to get to the desktop or even a cmd prompt. It never allows me to get there. I removed the new graphic card, so I've taken that out of the equation.

Thoughts anyone?

I am not sure I agree with XweAponX on some of the utilities he mentions, but I do agree it gives indications of a virus involved.

Have you tried running the SFC from Offline? The link refers to Windows 7, but the commands are the same from the Command Prompt. If you can't get there with a Recovery option, you may need to boot to a recovery or install media.

You might also consider system corruption, unless you know of someone that might have been experimenting with the system.. :)

Well, "Consent" has been documented as being used by Viruses, all you gotta do is read the link I posted. As far as Task Manager Launcher, I would just use Task Manager itself and not bother with a launcher.

As far as "Consent" well this was something in Vista, .....
If you mean it started in Vista and continues into Windows 8, the statement is fine. I read it as meaning it was something just related to Vista. The involvement with viruses could very well be true, although I do not think so in this case, but a virus could be involved.

What happens exactly when you boot? Does it go to a black screen or something else? If the driver for the Video card was still being loaded it might still be causing problems.

The errors you have been seeing might be an indication of System corruption. A inadequate power supply, as bassfisher mentions, could be involved and causing that corruption.

What recovery options (Restore, Refresh, Reset) or recovery/install media do you have available?

Hi,

This is typically what happens when I reboot. It comes up with the dell emblem and appears to load. Comes up with the screen that shows the time and date, which are both correct, to the correct time and it changes. When I click the mouse it comes up with my user to log in. I log in and then it turn to a black screen for about 5-10 minutes then comes up with the explorer.exe Application Error and then I X out of it and then it comes up with the Taskhost.exe Application Error and I X out of it.

It then stays black for another 20 minutes and then when I click it comes up with the
rundll32.exe Application Error

Then it stays black again and doesn't respond.

I do not have any recovery disks, the system was purchased as refurbished, but has been working fine for several weeks, no issues.

So I'm at a lose to how to go from here. I have no issue with completely restoring the system if I need to.

Thanks for all the suggestions and ideas

I think the next step would be to find you an install disk for your version of Windows 8, if you know exactly what version you had, you can search Google for a download location, I have found legit downloads of the install disk on the net. Links have been posted, you can search the forums for "Windows 8 Install Disk Download" and see if anything comes up,

Because if you can't get into Windows, you'll have to run a fresh install, saving your user docs and files to "Windows.old" and from there you can move them all back.

Last night my system froze up and when I rebooted this am, it gave me a black screen of deth with a cursor and access to task manager. But I overclocked my Processor and I think that caused it, I was able to log out and my desktop came back up.

If you know what file is acting up, you can copy it from another system running the same version of Windows 8, I've done that as well. You can copy it to a flash drive, and use Hiren's Boot CD to boot to your laptop, use Mini-XP and it gives you access to all of your drives, then you can move the file in that way, over the one that's corrupt.
