file association

I'm having a pickle with file associations. For example, 7zip has file associations built in to its options, yet it has no effect. I get a perameter error when trying.

also, VLC media player won't take over certain file types(AVI) for axample for me either. This is the only problem I've had yet, but its only been 1 day. And since I was having the bug that I can't acess or save files to drives I had to disable UAC so no windows menu apps will run so double clicking an AVI just errors that media player can't run.

so many bugs still, I hope 8.1 fixes this stuff.

Lots of people don't have the problems as what you described so maybe it's your PC/Software. Looking at your specs, you have your PC OC'ed at 4.7GHZ. Is it stable ? and Did you stress test or run prime95 ? maybe you should re-install these two programs with BIOS set at default to see if you still have the same problems.

I agree with topgundcp, there must be some other reason for the issues you're having. I have been running Win 8 since the very first preview and have never encountered any file association problems. Are those the only 2 programs having file association issues? For instance, do you have Office installed and do those file associations work for extensions like .doc or .xls or .ppt? If other file associations work OK, then I would re-install those 2 programs as suggested. If no other file associations work then I would probably start by opening an admin cmd prompt and running sfc /scannow to check the integrity of your system files.

yeah I'm going to assume it's the software. my overclock is stable, prime 95 for 12 hours no errors and no WHEA errors in event log, been running this speed for 6 months, turbo and offset voltage enabled so it idles down under no load to 1.2v. and around 2ghz, temps are 29c idle and 65c load under normal use, prime will get it into the 70s.

it is only these programs. the only other issue ive had with 8 is the uac. not allowing me to save files to disk. very annoying.

I'd be tempted to do a complete re-install of Win 8. I haven't had any UAC issues nor have I read about anyone else having UAC issues that prevent saving files to disk. I regularly save files to local drives as well drives out on my network.

Again, I see cases where people are having problem with UAC. I have 3 PC's and one Laptop and have installed Windows 8 numerous times and never once have this problem.

In some cases, for the software to register properly in the registry, you might need to run the installer as Admin.

Since your hardware seems OK as stated. Let us try:
  1. Turn the UAC on again and from the Action center->Use Account Control Settings, just move the slider down to never notify.
  2. From the elevated command prompt run: dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
  3. Again, from the elevated command prompt run: sfc /scannow
  4. Re-install the software by right click->Run as Admin.

I used to have the same problem but I kept on right clicking on the files and choosing what app I wanted to use to start them. By Default, if you install a new Tile that plays AVIs, then THAT app will take over handling them. The trick is to not click that Notification on the upper right that says "New Apps have been found that can open these kids of files" - That way, it just stays at what yo set as the default app.

You can also set the app for the extension in Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Again, I see cases where people are having problem with UAC. I have 3 PC's and one Laptop and have installed Windows 8 numerous times and never once have this problem.

  3. Again, from the elevated command prompt run: sfc /scannow
  4. Re-install the software by right click->Run as Admin.

I'm going to do this right now, the workaround for the file saving problem concerning UAC I found on this forum,
but it breaks all the tile apps, it was to Disable user account control: switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation in the local security policy.

this is about rediculous, I undid the security policy change, and turned UAC to default, rebooted, put UAC on never notify like I always do.

Now I can't save to C:/ again. Or install a program for the same reason. I'm trying to install the Secure download manager from dreamspark so I can download Windows 8.1 and I can't even do that.
