    getting 8.1?

I have purchased Windows 8, just haven't installed it yet (will do that when I need to). My question is will I have to install Windows 8 to be able to download 8.1 when it becomes available on the 17th October, or will they provide a link for it (with us having to provide our serial # as proof) to download.

Windows 8.1 is being released to consumers as an update to Windows 8 via the Windows Store, so you would need to install 8 first and then upgrade. That is, unless MS decide to offer an ISO download between now and then.

You can do a fresh install using the Windows 8.1 RTM ISO if you have access to that, then you would just use your Windows 8 license key to activate Windows. You can also use the same ISO to upgrade to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 now.

If you bought 8, then I would stick with it, at least until 8.1 becomes "real"

If I were you, I would install 8.1 Preview into a new machine, and if you like it, then you can update when 8.1 comes around.

I certainly agree with XweAponX because windows 8.1 does not work with all computers. I tried installing it last summer and it took down my internet. Had to reinstall Windows 8. So yes, I would try it first on a new machine

I had issues with WIFI and track pad when I upgraded to the preview though the store. No such issues with a clean install of the TechNet RTM version. YMMV

That's the version I installed, the Technet version. I tried the first version of it, then I put a later version in.

    Question, please . . .

I have downloaded the Technet ISO of 8.1 and I must use the key if I install it now. I'm wondering if I wait until 8.1 is available from the Microsoft Store, if I can get a key from there and use my ISO from Technet. Object being to save some download time, as well as the fact that, if I'm not mistaken, any key I have for the Technet version will expire when my subscription to Technet expires at the end of November.

You can use one of the leaked install keys to install and then activate with a Windows 8 key. I've done it both ways, on my laptop I just used my TechNet 8.1 key. On my desktop I used the 8.1 install key and then used a Windows 8 key to activate. It remains to be seen if the TechNet keys will actually expire with your subscription.

The one I downloaded had a key posted to use. Don't know if that key is still active.
