Windows 8 Corrupted Recycle Bin

I recently had an issue with ownership where I had to change back the ownership of my C:\ drive to Administrators and was able to fix that. However, I'm still getting an alert that I have a corrupted Recycle Bin. I tried to delete it, but it comes right back even in Safe Mode. I tried removing the directory with "rd /s /f C:\$Recycle.bin", but it just tells me that the directory is not empty. There's this one folder with one r0OWNYK.dbx file inside the bin. Anyone have any ideas on how to remove it?

Hello Soolshock, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You could use the same method in the tutorial below to delete the $Recycle.bin file on each hard drive to hopefully fix this. The command should be this instead though.

RD /S /Q C:\$Recycle.bin

Recycle Bin Corrupted - Cannot Delete File or Folder

Hope this helps, :)

Hey Brink,

I tried both ways earlier but the same file keeps reappearing which causes the same Corrupted recycle bin error to come up. :(

I believe that file is a virus. It will be trying to protect itself, so you might need to check with TDSSkiller or a Sirefef Removal tool, if that file is associated with a Virus, the Virus will be accessing it and it wont be able to be deleted.

Actually, know what, I'm wrong, that file is an OUTLOOK file, it's an Outlook Database file, so you should restore it, it's hooked into your Outlook program.

I don't use Outlook so I don't really have a need to restore it. Should I just use TDSSKiller to to permanently remove it and stop the file and the error message from reappearing?

Do you have outlook installed at all? You may have to restore the file, then use Outlook to delete it.

The name of the file, is that a nickname you use? If it is not, then it probably is a virus. But it doesn't hurt to run TDSSkiller or the Eset Sirefef removal tool.

Otherwise, you will have to use "Unlocker" - You can get it from Major Geeks, download it, and shut off your Antivirus. Install it using CUSTOM settings and tell it NOT to install the "Delta Toolbar" which is a virus.

Most AV programs delete the installer so you have to shut them off while you work with the file. But UNLOCKER itself is totally safe, if you use the Custom Install

How about:
  1. Open elevated command prompt and run: chkdsk /f /r c:
  2. Reboot then right click on $Recycle.bin, take ownership
  3. Right click on $Recycle.bin->Properties and uncheck Readonly
  4. Right click on $Recycle.bin then delete.
  5. The $Recycle will be re-create and you might get the same message ie. The $Recycle is corrupted....
  6. Reboot your PC.

Try what TopGun says if what I suggested don't work. But I wanna know, if you have ever used the nickname "r0OWNYK" for any kind of eMail alias.

Cos if that ain't you, then someone else made an account and named it that. And I know there are Outlook exploits out there that hackers use to get into your machine.

Performing the chkdsk at the moment and it seems to be getting stuck at 27%. I'll leave it on overnight and check back tomorrow.
For future references, how would I stop chkdsk from running at boot using a windows 8 dvd?

I've just cancelled it with no ill effects, and then re-ran it immediately from Hiren's Mini-XP or an install dick from a command prompt.

Well I scheduled a chkdsk as I restarted my computer so it's just running. Any way I can disable an on-boot chkdsk somehow?

I don't think so, it's the Automatic Diagnosis you have to disable, I've tried disabling that, but I could not figure out how. If your drives are in good condition, it won't run.

What yo can do, is change your Boot GUI to Legacy mode, it's the BCDedit command.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/5245-startup-options-enable-disable-windows-8-a.html

Run this command as administrator (Admin Command Prompt):

bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy

That will set Windows 8 to boot like 7, and then yu can choose your boot options or Safe Mode right from there, instead of running through the hoops Microsoft has set.
