It looks like it is a Codec issue, if you download and install VLC player as rickyfk suggested, it should work as VLC has a ton of extra codecs that WMP doesn't. I had issues with WMP playing some of my videos on Windows 7 and since I switched to VLC, every movie and video played flawlessly :).

Techwoman, did the movies play before?

1) Put in a video that you know had worked before.

2) As it plays, right click on the screen and look for "Video" in the popup menu

-See if there is a setting for "Show Video" and make sure it is clicked.

I can usually play any video file in WMP, I havent had to install any Codec packs. If any of these videos are WMV files, go into OPTIONS and then PERFORMANCE and put a check by "Turn on Direct X for WMV files"

However, both of these guys suggest using VLC aka VideoLAN. Google that, downlaod it only from it's official site. It'll play ANYTHING, and if you start using it, you may not ever use WMP ever again.

One other thing - if any of these videos are "Digital Content" from a purchased DVD or downloaded from Amazon or something they may be Protected, they will show no video if you have deleted your DRM files. I don't know where DRM files are stashed in Windows 8, but you may have deleted them by accident, and that could account for this too.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
First off just to say that these were movies I video recoreded and they worked great until I tried the other day and none of the movies I made with my camera are now working. I personally do not like VLC. I am just wanting to figure out why this all of a sudden stopped playing my video's. So I will try what you said.Xwe

Why don't you like VLC? It kicks arse, plays anything. But you like what you been using so I understand.

The other one I use a lot is MPC-HC, just google that and get it, it rocks.

Have you moved or edited the movie files with another app? Like Windows Moovie Maker or NCH VideoPad? I'm wondering if the files are corrupted - Try copying a few of them, and bring them to another computer with Windows 8 and WMP, or even a Windows 7 machine, see if they play in that.

I'm thinking there must be a setting you may have clicked by accident and it shut off your Video Output - Check your Video Card Control Panel as well.

Make sure that your computer is up to date. Microsoft includes a Camera Codec Pack for Windows 8, with the updates.
You can also get it here:
Download Update for Microsoft Camera Codec Pack for Windows 8 (KB2859541) from Official Microsoft Download Center

Which App, the Windows 8 Codec Pack? It should go right in, I had it at one time. But I took it out cos I dont need it.

Scan it first, may be a virus, its a new Virus trend, take apps that are valid and infect them with Sirefef and Solimba. I found a VLC and a Firefox Browser that were actually virus spreaders. ESET NOD32 is the AV that finds it the most.

You know what, it just occurred to me, you better do a Virus Scan, many horrible virii can cause stuff like this to happen. There's a virus that takes over Windows Defender even, and spreads through the system that way, blocking valid AV programs:

Try this first:

TDSSKiller Rootkit Removal Utility Free Download | Kaspersky Lab US

Then This:

How do I remove Sirefef (ZeroAccess) trojan? - ESET Knowledgebase

And also try Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit tool.

Let me know if yo find anything. And get a GOOD Antivirus and run a full scan, use ESET if possible, you get a 7 day free trial if you download it, that wold be enough to kill anything.

And try Malwarebytes, run a full scan with that, even the free version will allow you to do that.

The fact that that app won't run may indicate you have Sirefef, cos that's what it does.

Okay I am not a pro computer person so can you say that in simpler terms. Thanks. I tried up dating the media package and that was the thing I got which I wrote above. It also would not let me download VLC. So I am not sure what up. I ran a Malwarebytes too to make sure I was not dealing with a bug.

Read my Edit, you may have a Virus. If you use Malwarebytes, do a full scan, and let it finish. But Malwarebytes is not a an Antivirus, even tough it finds some of them.

Yah... If you are being Blocked from downloading, Sirefef will do that. It will only allow you to download other apps infected with more sirefef.

Sounds like you may have installed a fake malwarebytes that is really a virus. Did you download it from malwarebytes.org? That is the correct place to do it. Also, is the AVG the paid or free version?

Yes, I downloaded Malware from its sight. AVG is a free version. However for some strange reason the trojan horse thing pops on AVG up when I run Malwarebytes. Here is what is says on AVG," Trojan horse Downloader. Generic13.BMKE." Now I thought I got rid of it three times now but it is still here.

Help!!

Hi Techwoman,

Your pc is clearly infected with a virus. It sounds like all effort to tackle the problem failed so far.

What you can do is try McAfee Stinger. It's a standalone tool that kills most of the irritating virusses that cripple your pc. It's however NOT a full virusscanner. You use Stinger to uncriple your pc so that another virusscanner can take over.

Download McAfee Stinger here:

Stinger | McAfee Free Tools

If you can't download it ==> download it at another pc and put it on a USB-stick. And remember, always run a full scan. And most important, don't visit your online bankaccount etc. untill you've completely solved this issue!!!

Good luck!

I scanned Malwarebytes full scan had three hits. Well now I am running stinger and AVG popped up again. Could it be possible that AVG is an issue?
