If you're not sure what windows 8 and windows 8.1 looks like....just do a search on youtube, there is plethora of videos on it. IMO, it's faster and uses less power and very efficient with the use of the CPU/RAM.

All I can say is try the preview of 8.1 and see for yourself.

Oh, my! OhMy!

First off, to my mind, it's like comparing apples to oranges; both taste good, but the texture's quite different. Or, comparing an old, comfy pair of shoes (Windows 7) that are well broken in to a brand new pair (Windows 8) that put so many blisters on your feet that you can no longer walk.

When I installed Windows 8, I couldn't figure out how to shut the silly computer down! Hint: Mouse Cursor to top right corner of your monitor, slide down and click on Settings (the gear cog), then click on Power and then choose what you want the computer to do.

I would suggest that you go here:

Free ebook: Introducing Windows 8: An Overview for IT Professionals (Final Edition) - Microsoft Press - Site Home - MSDN Blogs

to get a free introductory e-/PDF book.

Or, just search for Windows 8 Books on Bing or Google. There're a lot of them out there.

Personally, I think people that rant and rave about how much they dislike Win 8 or how different it is are making mountains out of molehills. In Win 7, I don't use the Start menu but instead use Quicklaunch, Toolbars, the Taskbar and the desktop to access my programs. I do the same on Win 8 so don't miss the Start menu. In Win 7, Alt-F4 from the desktop brings up the shutdown options, same with Win 8. The only thing I really needed to adjust to in Win 8 was I needed to click once with my mouse to get to the desktop at boot time and Win 8.1 has addressed that with the ability to configure it to boot direct to the desktop..

What is most controversial about Win 8 is the Start screen and the Metro apps. I simply don't use them and Win 8 works just as well for me as Win 7. If you can get past the Start screen and Metro apps, Win 8 isn't that much different.

I'm not trying to sway your decision. Just a few mentionables.
If you decide to install 8 , first thing you should do is move the Desktop Tile to be the very first tile (Top Left). Then you can go to Desktop from Start Screen by clicking the Winkey or Enter key after you login.

Do a lot of reading about 8 and upcoming 8 here in Eight Forums and in Google searches to see what can be expected. As well as options to customize it for your liking.

Some love 8 & some hate 8. Some like it after installing 3rd party software to navigate. Some like it after customizing it from within 8 to navigate.

There are 2 locations to work from.
1.- Desktop which opens "Programs"
2.- Start Screen (also referred to as Metro or Modern) which opens Apps

Tutorials is located within Eight Forums and great info to help customize 8. Check out Context Menu & Shortcuts to begin.

... When I installed Windows 8, I couldn't figure out how to shut the silly computer down! ...
This reminds me of how, back in 1996, someone gave me a Mac computer. I booted it up and played with it for awhile then decided to turn it off. The Power button I used to turn it on didn't do anything when I pushed it to try to turn the Mac off. I ended up unplugging the darn thing because I couldn't figure out how to turn it off. The next day I talked to someone at work that owned Macs and he explained how I had to go about 3 levels deep into some menus in the Mac OS in order to shut it down!

Ohhhhhhhhh, yeah! Macs absolutely hate me!

A co-worker used a Mac and I used a PC. Her computer messed up, and since I was the office computer guru, she called me. Well, I couldn't make heads nor tails out of that system and for the first time, a computer defeated me.

I'm pretty sure Macs and PCs are on a level playing field these days, but back then . . . I still don't know the first thing about a Mac and I'm perfectly happy to stick to my PCs.

Win 7 vs Win 8

Personally, I am torn. When I feel more techy and want to keep up, I use Win 8.
However, if I want the programs I lost to get 8 and the ease of 7 I lean that way.
I have images of both but do not go back and forth. I have been with 8 for sometime and will give 8.1 a try when it is an update.
Win 8 is a bit faster.

I did go back to Win 7 for a day and everything was there working well jut as when I bought the pc.

If I want ease and all apps working, I use Win 7 but if I want to work a bit and keep current I use Win 8.

I must say, when I imaged to Win 7 it was not long before I imaged right back to 8.

I know what you mean, Peter. I'm doing my best to get settled in with Windows 8 and am looking forward to the 8.1 upgrade. However, given the learning curve and extra keystrokes required, Windows 8 isn't faster for me.

Quite frankly, I could care less whether I keep up with the Joneses in the Tech department; I just want my computer to do what it's supposed to do and let me get my work done. So far, I've found a few apps that don't play nice with Windows 8, and that's the reason I set up my old dual boot system. If I know I'm going to use something that makes Windows 8 barf, I'll boot up Win 7.

BUT, and it's a great big BUT, I've just upgraded to a new box with only Windows 8 on it. Thus far, I haven't set Windows 7 up on it and probably won't until the 8.1 upgrade. Then, we'll see.

What I especially like about Windows 7 is that the startup window isn't cluttered with a few gazillion tiles unless I put them there. I like my desktop to be clean and neat, without ANY icons on it.

When I beta tested Vista, and went back to XP after the beta was over, it was a real pain in the tush. By the time we finished the beta on Windows 7, there was no way I could go back to XP and I had to have Windows 7. I've rocked back and forth between the two (Win 7 & Win 8) for awhile now, and I'm still inclined to favor Windows 7.

We'll see what 8.1 brings to the party . . . :dinesh:

DISM is the biggest pro for Win 8 IMO. Can be made to look and act pretty much like 7 and boot straight to desktop. It is less of a resource hog also.

??? I did a search on DISM, but still don't understand what it is. Maybe it creates an image of Win 8?

Methinks we need a list of acronyms so when someone abbreviates, the rest of us can look it up.

Toolbars are easy to create. Some just require a checkmark. Anyway, for the Desktop Toolbar
  1. right click your Taskbar
  2. hover your mouse over Toolbars
  3. put a check in front of Desktop

Now you can see everything on your Desktop by clicking the » on your toolbar
As well as having a clear desktop for a nice background.

Whenever you send something to Desktop, it will automatically be added there at the bottom. Once in awhile you may want to right click the list and Sort by Name

Another very useful Toolbar for use in Win 8 is a "Programs" Toolbar:

  1. Right click on Taskbar
  2. Hover over Toolbars
  3. Select New Toolbar
  4. Navigate to %Programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
  5. Highlight Programs folder
  6. Click Select Folder
You'll then have a Programs menu that will list all of the Programs that are installed on your computer.

Another very useful Toolbar for use in Win 8 is a "Programs" Toolbar:

  1. Right click on Taskbar
  2. Hover over Toolbars
  3. Select New Toolbar
  4. Navigate to %Programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
  5. Highlight Programs folder
  6. Click Select Folder
You'll then have a Programs menu that will list all of the Programs that are installed on your computer.

Wowwwwwww, I do like that! It's as good as, or maybe even better than my Quick Launch Bar!

I've just begun to explore, but it looks like I can get to EVERYTHING on my computer from there. Wow!

Hi Wynonna
You said in a few words what I was struggling with. Who cares about the Joneses and being techy. I want my machine to do what it is supposed to and run well. I lost a few programs to get Win 8 like Bluetooth.
I would be better off with Win 7 on both pcs and am leaning that way.
Peter

Can you elaborate? What do you mean that you lost Bluetooth? Bluetooth is alive and well on my Win 8 machines.

advisor

When I moved from Win 7 which came installed on my pc to Win 8 I ran the advisor which told me I would lose some features and Bluetooth was one of them.
After attaining Win 8, the programs it told me I would lose, was accurate.
