    Black screen, need help

Hey guys, so heres my problem.
I have my laptop running windows 8, and whenever i boot it up it just shows the "HP" logo and then the spinning dots on the bottom, then it just goes to a black screen with a cursor on it. Now I cant do anything with this, seeing as it is windows 8 I cant boot it into safemode from startup. I have no idea what to do.

I have an HP Envy Laptop.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks.

Didn't you get a "rescue disk" with it ? Laptops also usually have a rescue partition on HDD too. You would need a rescue disk from HP or windows disk to do repair.

Can you press the delete key to get into the bios at startup ?

Ow I had the same problem like yours. I Reinstalled the OS on that previous win 8 system partition. Just format that win 8 system partition and the extra 350mb reserved partition and then again select those unallocated partition to install the os. No need to format other partition and this way you wont lose the data on other partitions.

Okay well no, I cannot get into bios settings by pressing delete during startup.

It is my sisters laptop and knowing her she probly threw out the back up discs that HP sent with it.
And HPgeek I am not entirely sure how to do that.

Black Screen with Cursor usually means, a bad activation. Can you hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and pull up Task Manager? if you can do that, pull up Task Manager and run SLMGR.VBS /dlv and see what it says.

I have seen this with people who used one of those crack activators to try to activate Windows 8. I've seen this "Black Screen of Death" on three different computers that were all using one of those.

The solution is to run an In-Place Install and use a valid key.

A friend of mine had the same problem,
Only he did not had a cursor, our explaination was a crashed Registry.
We reinstalled his Win8 to Factory settings (which is a complete cleanup and reset of your PC) and that solved the problem.
It would be nice if you got your files backuped on a second partition (like "D: or else) or backuped on an external drive. Or online..

You have to try to enter the boot system. You can try to push the keys f1, f2, f9, f11, home, delete or end when it prompts the HP logo.

    I schould try them seperately.

If you where able to enter a boot menu you schould be able to prompt a pc refresh (what does not affect your files), a system recovery (what sets your pc back to your last restore point) and a system reset (what sets your PC back to how you bought it and effects your files). If you choose the last one and you have your files on a seperated partition like D: you should be able to choose not to reset that partition. That would mean you keep your files.

    Good Luck!

If task Manager won't come up, then it's another issue.

But if it IS activated and SLMGR.vbs says so, you will have to do an In-Place install. You can start the Setup from task Manager by Browsing to the Setup.exe on the install disk, make sure your disk is the exact same version of 8 you had in there.
