Ok, then it is not an activation issue. The solutions I use only work if Task Manager will come up. Did you say the cursor moves around?

On the three systems where I had to deal with this, I was able to reinstall windows and activate it properly. If you can't do that, then you'll have to save your personal files and do a fresh installation. So we'll have to find you an install disk somewhere.

I don't know what else, if you had an install disk, you could boot to that and use the command prompt to run CHKDSK and some other tests. Can you get into Command Prompt Safe mode at all?

If you just want to scan your drive, you can download Hiren's Boot CD from my link below, burn it and boot to it. Go into Mini-XP and run a CHKDSK on the drive from Mini-XP, it's the only way I know how to do it without taking the drive out. You can do other tests on the hard drive in Hiren's as well, in Dos Programs, there are a bunch of Drive Testing programs. The one I use most is called GWscan, bot it only works with WD and some Seagate drives. But whatever your make of hard drive is, there will be a full disk checker in there

And HPgeek I am not entirely sure how to do that.
you still got the prob unsolved!. Looking at your question I think you have the same problem(if I am not wrong)that I came through. Ok first you have to do these-
    1. Get a windows 8 setup disk.
    2. Go to the bios setting by pressing the 'Esc or delete' key when the 'HP' Logo comes to the screen.(you have to press the Power key for 5-7 sec if the ' press The esc for startmenu' or something like this wont pup under the HP logo). Start the machine again.
    3. Insert the win 8 setup disk and..wait...change the boot order to Cd/dvd rom drive
    4. Follow the screen instructions..
    5. Select the drive carefully.. I hope you have partions like- win8 system,
    Local disk(D and local disk(E
    6. You just need to Format that win8 system partition and the 350mb reserved partition.
    7. Lets say you got 150GB unallocated partition. Select this partition click next or install whichever comes to the option. (no need to make partition manually ...it will get partitioned to Local Disk c:and a 350 mb reserved drive.)
    8. This way you will have the files on the extra partition and this is simple.
    9. If you cant acces the BIOS menu then I am sorry this was another problem then. But I am sure it will work good luck.

Okay i don't have a windows 8 install disc. This is my sisters laptop so I am just trying to fix it.

I do have a windows 7 install disc however.

Would I be able to use that. I like windows 7 better anyways.

Well, you can't fix windows 8 with that, if that is the best solution at hand, you can try doing a fresh install, you will have to wipe the drive, but save the Drivers folder. Try to get into the Drive, you can use Hiren's Boot CD and Mini XP to get into the drive, then you can move files out to a flash drive.

I highly suggest finding a Windows 8 Install disk Online.

Would I be able to just wipe the drive with D-Ban?

And then do a fresh install?

D-Dan? No Just create a new partition while installing Windows 7, it's in the advanced partition choices when it gets to that part of the setup, you will be able to wipe the drive and reformat it right from there. Just delete the partition and then make a new one, Windows 7 will want to make that 100 MB Grub partition on some systems.

Maybe that would help

If it goes to a black screen with a cursor, it's the same issue as what you started with. We gotta find a way to get you a Windows 8 Install disk.
