    Shell32 Issue

    Hello,

as mentioned in the title, I have an issue with my shell32. I've tried to install a custom shell32 to install a custom black Design and it worked for weeks. However, after the forced reboot today the design was changed back...

So I tried to swap the shell32 again but was a bit careless (I guess..) and cut I from the System32 folder into a backup-folder.

My problem now is that I can't copy it back.. neither the original nor the custom one...

There is also the poblem now that everytime I try to open a program it says something about not having enough RAM to open it because of the missing shell32.dll. So I can't even open the Permissioneditor to try and fix it somehow :/

I obviously haven't tried a reboot because it may crash my system completely.

I hope there a way to somehow solve this issue without reinstalling the whole system.

Also I'm new to this forum so I hope it's the right section for this question.

Since you probably don't have any restore points made you could try running

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

in elevated command prompt & then run sfc /scannow

    Post back with results.

    Thanks for your reply.

I guess that might sound kinda stupid but I can't actually run the command prompt as an administrator.
If I do the same Error Message as usual appears, indicating that I have insufficient RAM left.

However, it's possible to run it without administrator privileges... but than again, I can't execute the command.

You could restart & free up some ram & risk a total freeze up or you could return it to factory settings.

Just to be sure that RAM is not an issue, how about a screenshot of your Resource Monitor?

One more comment. I have seen instances where one can be successful by taking ownership of a dll file, then renaming it, and then replacing the file with another; however, I fear that may not work in your case.
    Good luck.

Okey, thanks for all your responses.

But to make it clear: I can't actually run anything that didn't run while I cut the dll out of the folder. That includes the taskmanager as well the interface to take ownership over a file...

What I still can access are the explorer and the control panel as well as all the programs still running.

What will happan if I return to factory settings? Will my personal files be affacted?

They will be gone so try and move them to an external source prior to doing the factory restore.

    Still thanks for trying.

I will reset the system tomorrow.. If someone has another idea until then, please feel free to share it with me

There may be a way around it; however, I just don't know it. A word of advice going forward. If you are going to attempt something like that in the future, consider creating a system image beforehand, so you can get back to where you started gracefully. Good luck.
