Hello,

The problem is existing since W7
I could solved it by changing the register
HKEY USERS\.DEFAULT\ControlPanel\Keyboard\InitialKeyboardIndicators= 2

In W8 the same problem so i did the same.
Result:
*after start-up Num-key is not on so i have to do it manually
-after a restart it comes on normally

Somebody any idea or another proposal to activate the Num-key automatically after start-up.

Regards

Hi again Rita,

I just tested mine and I get the same results as you. I have the Boot Up Num-Lock Option set to ON in my BIOS and no-go on boot. With that said, I'm thinking it has something to do with fast-boot enabled because it should work. You might want to try disabling that option if you have it set to see if it works.

Update: I forgot to mention that I do see mine blink momentarily on a cold boot.

I keep referring to fast startup as fast boot so I hope you understood what I meant. Anyway, thanks topguncp for responding with the correct name for that option.

One more thought, if the above does not work and you are running a UEFI BIOS, you may have a fast boot/startup option there as well. Coincidentally, I have fast boot/startup enabled in both my UEFI BIOS and Win 8 as well. With that combo, I boot to the desktop in 6-7 seconds. So, for me, it would not be worth it to change any options to sacrifice a fast boot to aviod the need to press a key. Cheers!

Hello all,

I posted an answer but something went wrong.

Again thanks for the technical information which was very helpfull.

Indeed after resetting the Fast Restart Num-key was on
The start-up time didn't change visually but the shut down time was longer

Conclusion: it will kep it as just by manually activated the Num-key as proposed.

Sorry, but I'm not a happy camper and won't settle for second best if I can help it! I checked the BIOS and NumLock is turned on, but it doesn't. Further, when I went into the Registry, "HKEY USERS\.DEFAULT\ControlPanel\Keyboard\InitialKeyboardIndicators= 2" is not what I saw. At the very least, I expected to see '=1', but there was a string of numbers approximately six or seven digits long. So, I made no changes and backed out.

I am wondering if the Windows 8.1 upgrade will take care of this problem?

My System: HP Pavilion 500-056 8 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD. Logitech Wave wireless keyboard and mouse. As I said, I don't like settling for less than what I bargained for, and this ain't it!

Hi,

Thanks for the interest.

When setting the value =2 than it works after a restart bu not after a start-up.

As the experts explained (see above) some change took place into the updates so that it was disabled in favour fot the speed to start-up.

Indeed , will 8.1 solve it , i don't because some members are already using it.

So, what you're saying is that if I boot my computer in the morning, NumLock won't work unless I boot the computer and then do a "restart"? This just gets worse and worse!

I think I'll post a new question asking if 8.1 will cure the problem and see if we get an answer.
