Need help, might be very simple for you

I recently got a Windows 8 laptop, but one thing that really bugs me is the checkmark on the desktop icons. For example,

That looks like it could be a Norton overlay but I'm not sure. The old way to get rid of those was to go into Norton settings and on the right side, uncheck "Backup Status Overlays". Then reboot.

To get rid of the tick, do this

You may also want to get rid of the shortcut arrow overlay.
If you've got a 64 bit machine go and download FxVisor64 from here ...

Hi DaddyG,

I did the opposite. I went into your suggested view, "ticked" the "item check boxes", and nothing changed on my desktop. The icons still look the same:

So, can you actually make those boxes appear and disappear on your desktop because I can't do it that way?

You have to actually select something for the checkboxes to show up.
