Frequent Explorer.exe crash

Explorer.exe crashes on me a few times a week after startup when I try to search for something in the Start Menu. This is the error report:

ExplorerCrash.PNG

I am using StartIsBack on Windows 8 Pro x64 and this happens when I am using its Start Menu search. I never use Windows 8's awful native search so I'm not sure if this is a problem with Windows or with StartIsBack. Any insight would be highly appreciated.

Uninstall that crapware and remove any codec pack you may have installed too. Then run a sfc /scannow in a command prompt with admin rights.

Whoa whoa whoa. Crapware? :sarc:

If you're referring to StartIsBack, if I'm gonna get rid of that I might as well get rid of Windows 8 while I'm at it.

No codec pack here.

Watch the attitude man.

I'm curious... If you've never used the search, how do you know it's awful?

Just edited the OP; I was exaggerating. I have used it and I hate it, just like the rest of Modern UI.

StartisBack is Crapware? I thought it was decent when I was using it. But he may have other "cackware" installed, something may be latching on to Explorer and crashing it, you'd have to post your complete list of Startup Items.

As far as Codec Packs - You don't need them if your primary Video Program is VLC, it has all the ones you'll ever need. If there is anything missing, then you can install MPC-HC and use that for the missing codecs. But they are always adding new codecs to VLC.

There are a few "Windows 8 Codec Packs" that need to be avoided, but the main ones, Shark, etc, are still malware-free.

Exactly. StartIsBack is not crapware and I paid for it to vastly improve my Windows 8 UI and UX. I don't need no Windows 8 defenders/apologists jumping the gun here and telling me something that's not relevant to my problem.

I have already contacted the developer of StartIsBack to find out if this is a problem with his software, but in the meantime I would like to know if the error report I provided in the OP can provide any leads. Here is my startup items list:

Startup.PNG

I use VLC and have never installed any codec packs on this PC. I don't install any bloated software or anything I don't need and I'm very careful about that with this PC.
