Try this, starting 1) & down until Windows 8 boots OK.

Did you make the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disks?

You can order the Microsoft official OEM Recovery disks from the OEM manufacturer's website.

The Recovery USB drive can be very problematic, I recommend you also make a Windows System Image.

Theog,

Thank you for the quick reply. I'd like to wipe the laptop and start fresh. All my wife's files are backed up on dropbox.

What is the simplest method to completely wipe it out and start fresh?

Simple directions are needed...I'm not SUPER technical savvy, but I'm a quick learn if things are spelled out.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I can't get to the "Windows System Recovery Options" screen....all I get when I touch power button is VAIO logo for about 20-25 seconds - additionally, I see the white dots circle for about 15 seconds of that time and then bam...BLACK SCREEN....no OTHER options for REFRESH/RESET or anything else.

HELP!

Use the F12 key which should take you to BIOS and System Recovery Option.

I have a Toshiba and F12 is the key, may be different on a Sony, if so try F8.

ok, so the Sony VAIO laptops have a button on them that says "ASSIST"...if you power DOWN and hit the ASSIST button, it takes you into the System recovery mode and will enable you to "RESET" your laptop. I'm resetting now....hopefully that resolves the issue long term.

Thanks all!

Good news !

If the McAfee is a 30 day trial, I would recommend that you do not renew and do some research if you want additional protection.
