    Looping between desktop and start

Hi everyone. I'm new to windows 8. It's running on a Compaq laptop and it's being running ok for a few days.

Once I login into windows it jumps to the start screen with apps then goes to the desktop (but you only see the taskbar) and back to the start screen again. It's does this every second. I can bring up task manager and tried a few things which was a pain because its still loops but with patience I managed a few troubleshooting.

Here's what I tried so far:

    - System Restore (from cmd.exe) - it restored system but it still does the same thing
    - Advanced Boot Option - keep getting error in cmd (The boot configuration data store could not be opened. Access Denied.)
    - If I stop the Windows Explorer task the loop stops but once I start it again it loops again.

I can backup all my documents and just reinstall but do you guys know of anything else I could try to get it working again?

    Thank you for any help!

Can you boot into safe mode?
Have you checked to see if your "windows" key is stuck, this would cause it to switch back and forth between the desktop and start screen.

Refresh PC don't work says it was unable to do that. Ok so I haven't reformatted yet and managed to get the desktop to load
I booted into safe mode and disabled all windows third party services and processes and restarted. The desktop loads and doesn't switch like before I then re-unabled all services and it still loads normal. But know I get a error message every time, "explorer.exe - System Warning, Unknown Hard Error". I tried some suggestions like scanning the registery with HijackThis and I also tried scanning with WinOptimizer but the error still popups. Closing the error message reloads the desktop and I get the error message again.

Try running sfc /scannow in administrator command prompt.

Then run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth in administrator command prompt & restart & run sfc again.

    Post back with results.

    David Bailey,

I wanted to jump in and say thanks for this. I was unaware of the online image repair service. I was getting sfc /scannow reports that it found errors but could not repair them.

I followed your guidance given to DeclaredInsane and now sfc /scannow reports no errors. I did have to run it twice after restart to get the no errors response.

I was having this Windows 8.1 Blink Flashing Desktop Login Screen on 08/03/2015 with two HP Envy d7 Laptop Computers. The sfc and dism solution above did not work for me as I was unable to obtain a recovery source for dism. However, I found another post (Windows 8 keeps flashing between desktop and a blue screen, which - Microsoft Community) that suggested removing Norton Antivirus. After removing Norton, I was able to use the computer without any issues.
