I apologize for leaving out a step. The one which allows you to add 'Pin to Start' to your context menu.

Steps 2, 5, 6, 7 & 8 will add that option to your context menu.

"Pin to Start" Files in Windows 8
I just tested in 8.1 and it works as well. Now the OP can pin his docs to the taskbar as follows:

Right-click the document you want to pin to the taskbar and select "pin to start":

Now, go to the start screen and select "pin to taskbar":

Now, go back to the destop and the document should be pinned to the taskbar:

Click the pinned document and it will now open directly from the taskbar.

Nice find by pcRat and subsequent testing by caperjack too!

Another method of navigating 8 from the desktop is 'Toolbars'. We've used them in previous OS' but jimbo45 made them popular again.
I've 2 screenshots below. Both have 7 toolbars.
First is standard Takbar setup across the bottom.
Second is Taskbar down the left side with Toolbars stacked like a file cabinet.

If you notice the first icon, it's the Start orb from Brink's "Start" Screen Shortcut - Create in Windows 8 for Start screen
The second icon is the All apps screen from Brink's "All Apps" Shortcut - Create in Windows 8 (easier than going to Start screen, right clicking & clicking 'All apps' in lower right corner) I even have that on my Start screen below the 'Desktop' icon

For those of us who like to use the mouse once in awhile. Or all the time.

Looks solved to me, so I will mark the thread as such. Nice work gents. Thank you ALL for contributing and ..pinning this one down.

Before, though, I need to fully explore this new zero desktop-icon/zero-taskbar/zero-toolbar thing. The path of ZenKey; using the Winkey to access literally everything - all documents and functions, without exception.

Maybe I can create a theme with 1-pixel width window frames, and instead of calling them "frames" they are called "event horizons". More stuff like that. Sounds scheme all ancient gongs. A version of Chrome that is a widget the size of a URL box - etc.

..One Winkey to rule them all

[Edit ONE GONG sound, hit almost exactrly the same, but recorded from, and within, different spaces for different resonation/timbre signatures.... A new theme (paradigm really) so compelling that every Asian on earth must have it.... and billions more. "More of much-much less." ZenKey.]

So, I bought a pricey Logitech Matrix MX or Revolution mouse that (among other things) flips between the last two open programs (and, more specifically, the last-used document or file within that program).
