If you're comfortable taking the laptop apart, which it sounds like you are, disconnect the cable to the LCD. This should force the laptop to output video through the external port to your monitor.

    Worth a try.

    Good luck with it.

Tried FN F5 and disconnecting the LCD, nothing. Apparently new laptops only turn on the VGA and HDMI ports in Windows, since my wife's Asus works the same way. Will try installing win through USB now.

WE are not, you are blindfolding yourself by not replacing LCD.

NO need to wipe the HDD.
Manufacturer charges $200 to replace the screen and they are not easily available online, at least I wasn't able to find one for this particular model. I thought these forums exist to legally assist getting out of difficult situations. Even if I ever find the screen for around $50, I am never going to use it, other than to install Windows.

We can only help you, if you help yourself.
In case replace the LCD first.

No sweat - anyways, you could still be sitting on a lemon, and be back here trying to get it going in some fashion with some help from your friends.

No, seriously, good luck, and don't crack the new screen trying to get it to fit!

It's amazing the difference seeing with your own eyes. Everything worked out and Windows 8 self-activated, I didn't even need to pop the number or activate online. Also, weird thing: Acer removes the ability to wake laptops with external mouse or keyboard when the lid is closed. Go figure. Perhaps I'll be selling this complete laptop and picking up another older beater for TV hookup.
