    64 bit or 32 bit?

    I have a HP pavilion dv6 3017TU
Laptop and I am just curious about windows 8 and if I could install the 64bit version! Will there be any stability problem with only 3gb ram? please help..

With only 3GB of RAM, there is no compelling reason to install the 64bit version. The main plus with the 64 bit version is that it addresses and uses more than 4 GB of RAM. With only 3GB of RAM it will be essentially working like the 32 bit version.

Ya I thought so. Well then I guess I am gonna install 32 Bit os. But I would like to install the 64 bit if it won"t do any system stability or ram overflowing problem. I use my laptop for college and some net surfing.

When I checked the drivers page on hp's website for your model of laptop all I saw there were Windows 7 32 and 64 bit drivers. You might want to make sure your laptop will work with Win 8 before attempting to upgrade it. You might be able to use the Windows 7 drivers if you install them in compatibilty mode, but it is no guarantee.

Ya.. Thanks for the good idea. I got win 7 32 Bit driver. I hope 32bit's driver will work with 64bit win 8. ya know.. Any driver or app/software in compatibility mode does not look good to me.

The 64 bit OS will work with 3GB, as the Microsoft minimum RAM requirement is 2GB, but it will basically be operating as a 32 bit OS because of the amount of memory.

Win 7 drivers should work in Win 8. I'm using the Win 7 drivers in two different Win 8 systems that I have and no problem.

so officially 2gb is the minimum RAM requirement for windows 8 pro 64bit! Thats just great. Now I am sure I must install win 8 pro 64bit. I can get / find those 64bit drivers somehow...

You should be able to download the 64-bit win 7 drivers from HP's website.

That's simply untrue. A 64 bit OS is a 64 bit OS, regardless of how much memory you have.

What makes it 64 bit is the size of the virtual memory space, not the physical space. 64 bit OS also utilizes the extend CPU registers that 32 bit OS's don't know about.

HPGeek18, be aware that a 64 bit OS uses more memory than a 32 bit one does. So you will have less available memory for running your applications. This is because 64 bit applications are larger than their 32 bit counterparts, and the OS itself being 64 bit is larger than the 32 bit version, thus it consumes more memory resources. And if you run 64 bit apps, they will use more memory than their 32 bit versions.

Ya maybe you are right. Last night I installed the win8(64bit) pro and I noticed that 33%of my 3gb ram got full without running any Application. When I opened windows media player and microsoft office then the ram went upto 38%. Really...I never had such a huge RAM consumption with win 7ultimate 32bit. It doesn't feel good to see the RAM like this.
