My Stand On Windows 8 DP Day 2

Yep, really this is day 2. Before it gets brought up no I am not going to doing one of those day to day updates throughout windows 8. :zip: But I am actually starting a blog for that. Less annoying. You guys can put your helmets away now. :p

But basically in two days with the DP in my hands the first thing I liked was the idea of having all the touch this and that all over the place. While I'm just keyboard and mouse of my poor lil'netbook it'll be sweet to actually put a touch based monitor to work when I buy two of them.

While this is just the DP more native drivers for printers would of been nice. Now all my HP 3050 Deskjet does is become a glorified copier and collect dust. Thankfully, I'm not alone and others have Windows 7 so I can print!

I do love the extreme boot improvements to boot time, but I'd really like to see how time will play as factor of how stable Windows 8 will be unlike it's younger sibling 7 and the much older brother Windows XP.

One thing I'm not too overly impressed with and maybe that's only because I have a very limited playing field is the lack of "I don't get distr.... Ooooo Shiny!!" But I'm willing to stick around and see if developers dare to dress to impress.

Lastly since I don't have an open environment such as a full-out desktop to make my test-bed, netbook integration is horrible on the developers' part by making a required resolution of 1024 x 768. Thankfully I do have an old CRT that supports up to 1280 x 1024 but I run it at 1154 x 864 since any higher pushes being able to read the screen and deal with the high pitched squeal!

Other than that, day 2 with WDP has been ok and I'm willing to see what gets cooked up!

:geek: ok I'm ready for the on-set of rants and how my opinions are wrong. -- or maybe this place has decent folks who accept opinions!:thumb:

I've been using Windows 8 for quite a while now. Simply put, if I had to go back to 7, I'd miss 8 a lot. The Metro UI is amazing, especially on my touchscreen laptop. Also, yes we generally are accepting of opinions here.

I have been using WDP for a bit and yes I hated Metro. Now I just dislike it.

To me win 8 feels very much like win 7 SP-2 with a new Gui. It was faster initially but after I added back all the apps it slowed down like any other OS.

There are many things Ilike about WDP and it is my main OS so I cant be hating it.

I like the new task manager

I am not keen on the boot manager and have had to re-install WDP to clear some flaky registry settings.

All told a "B". Not bad for a preview.

Windows 7 or Windows 8 whichever boots up faster i like more.

But i like Windows 8 more due to the Play To feature which for some reason fails me on Windows 7.

Hi there
The only thing so far I'm missing is how to get "Classic Games" such as spider solitaire working.

I managed to install these on W2K3 server and W2008 server so it SHOULD be possible.
Other than that I've got ONE laptop where its now my main OS.

I'm talking of the standard MS Games that comes with domestic versions (Home version) of Windows 7 / Vista and XP.

Cheers

It is amazing how stable this early version stays.

The performance improvement is welcome although it will not be very noticeable on an SSD.

I can live without the Metro on my desktop. But I am looking forward to a Win8 tablet.

A few functional upgrades like Task Manager are nice, but I expect more.

The current version I would not trade against Win7.

It isn't :)

As a conventional user with mouse and keyboard I have to ask myself where it is going and if I am going to be left behind? There is no way I am going to buy a touch screen monitor, unless I can build it flat into my desk. Sitting here as I write and touching my monitor feels really weird and I know that it is not for me :) I am a traditional hands on desktop man (pun intended) and I need my home made PC in its case purring away in the background. I will go on to use Windows 8. That's why I am here, but at the moment it has got no real appeal to me.
Maybe its time to buy a touch screen and get my jigsaw out. Dual screen?? No problem, but my arms are only so long so I doubt it will progress to more, unless I use a mix. but then Microsoft had better get a better window manager with at least the ability to move windows between screens at a single tap!!
I only have one problem left now ............................ Where am I going to place my coffee cup? ..................... NO COFFEE NO PC!!!

PS me left behind??? Not a hope in Hell :D lol

I would agree with that, but I would not pay out money for a touch screen monitor, just for win 8.

Hi all
Touch screens are not the "Bees Knees" in every case .

For example if you sometimes have to work with physically handicapped people who only have fairly limited arm movement then Touch screens are an abomination - but there is no doubt that a lot of these people will like the simplicity of Metro style apps if these can be made more available straight from startup on to their own particular startup screen.

In any case imagine working on a fairly crowded place like a train and having to compose a complicated document -- give me a proper keyboard any day.

Touch screens IMO are really meant for things like smart phones or public applications such as purchasing tickets from machines in Railway stations etc or getting cash from ATM's.

I can't actually see any need for things like a touch monitor in a Home environment. - In any case who wants smeery fingers all over a nice clean monitor too !!

Cheers
jimbo

Jimbo you are absolutely right. I tried a big touch screen at BestBuy. After 5 minutes I had cramps in my arm. I already get cramps from a mouse. That's why I use a keyboard with a trackball where I can rest my hands on the desk.

I'm not going to disagree with either of you two. (jimbo & whs)

I would have a touch screen right now if the cost per inch on a touch screen didn't supersede that of a non-touch screen.

Other reasons for not owning one yet include, glitches. I put up with enough of them on my smart phone. Why do I want glitches on my computer that could affect critical decisions.

(That'll be the day when I see two buttons, "Blow up Earth" and "Give it 100 more years", I hit Give it more years and a glitch causes Blow up earth to be selected.)

Touchscreens like most things have it's use and target audience. Their common purpose is to eliminate the use of keyboard and mouse, which in technology world is a step forward (not back). To some an ipad for example may be little more than an electronic book, for others it's a portable personal computer. That said i am neutral to touchscreen technology.
