Windows keep closing when browsing files or copying/moving

I've just installed 8 on my Dell OptiPlex 380 at the office and I've noticed that randomly, file explorer windows will close on their own - even when I'm not actively working with them. The same goes for file copy/move operations.

I first thought it might be that the external hard drive was losing connection but now I've noticed it when working with local drives and when browsing my documents folder. No error at all - the window simply disappears. If the it's a copy process, the file will be partially copied so it's definitely ending the process and not just hiding it.

For the record, this existed from the first second I installed it, before I even installed any software.

This is especially annoying when moving files, as they only get partially moved and end up being corrupted. Thank God for backing up. =)

Ideas of where I should go with this?

That's odd, you can try hitting alt+Tab and see if the window is simply hidden.

    Or, you can use Teracopy:

TeraCopy for Microsoft Windows - Code Sector

Try that, copy something, see if the windows vanishes with that as well. Something is stealing the Copy Process' Point of Focus.

It's definitely not hiding the window. I have alt-tabbed through to be sure. Strange thing though, it didn't seem to happen at all today. What I didn't do after the fresh install was update, and those ended up running last night so I'm wondering if whatever it was might have been resolved with the updates, even if not specifically targeted by any of the updates. I know with 7 I had a few issues that were resolved with updates that had nothing to do them specifically so I'm crossing my fingers. If it keeps up I'll see what happens with TeraCopy -- planning to check it out anyway.

    Thanks!

I use TeraCopy for huge batches of files, and the great thing about it, is if it gets interrupted, you can resume, if you drag the intended folder to the same spot. Itr will mark off all the files already copied, then carry on from there.

If it was not hidden, then Explorer was crashing. I've never had that happen in Windows 8, are you using 8.1? I'll say just this: Stick with 8, it's better than 8.1.

I use Windows 8 on a Precision 370 Workstation, which is just one model under the one you got, and it works great, and with only 1 GB of Ram.

I haven't yet downloaded 8.1 but probably won't now. Not really aware of what's different for that matter. 1GB of RAM hey? I installed 8 on my laptop which is a Dell D420 and with 2GB of RAM it was a nightmare presumably because of the slow bus speed on those things. At times I noticed heavy disk access when the machine would be idle, even with idle defrag disabled. When I'd click on say, IE -- it would take it forever to finish whatever was accessing the disk and load IE. I ended up installing a 128GB SSD and reinstalling, and the damn thing is faster than the OptiPlex 380 w/ 8GB of ram. In fact, that old D420 is as fast or faster than most new machines I play with which have 4GB+ RAM and i5/i7 processors laptop or desktop. No joke.

2 GB is better, 1 GB is just enough. I can't have too many programs open, but otherwise it works fine - Did you try Teracopy? I need to know if it does the same thing.

You should also check the Application event log when the Copy window goes away, see if there are any anomalous entries, check in particular for any Red Exclamation marks.
