To Microsoft: 8.1 ISO wanted no account via the store

Hi there
I think with the impending release of Windows 8.1 those people who can't get enterprise via TechNet or work should also be allowed access to the relevant ISO download rather than have to set up an account with Ms and then use the wretched store to "Upgrade" even if it does a "New install".

What about people out there who don't necessarily even WANT Internet access on their machines --nothing wrong with Stand alone boxes for certain purposes -- for example even simple File and Print servers that don't need Internet access.

The idea of having to go through bells and whistles to set up Local accounts on windows 8.1 is nonsense. Also a lot of people often re-install Windows for all sorts of reasons --doing this from an ISO is far simpler than having to sort out downloads from the store --and what happens in any case if on the day you want to install Windows 8.1 you don't have Internet access for all sorts of reasons so you couldn't get to the stupid store even if you wanted to.

I'm not surprised changes are taking place at the top of Ms --otherwise it will sink faster than the Titanic.

Cheers
jimbo

:ditto: This is more than your typical service pack or Windows update. Its a kernel change and a whole lot more. Upgrade installs almost always have issues. I'd just as soon go right to 8.1 on a reinstall.

I agree. I want to do a clean install on my system and having to install 8 and then get the update through the store is a PIA. MS has said it wont release the ISO to the general public but hopefully that will change. The other question, with a clean install of 8.1 from a ISO will your 8 key work? Still a lot of questions which hopefully will be answered by Oct 17.

Jimbo, are you saying that MS's trend is to do AWAY with Disk Installers completely?

My LIFE and LIVELIHOOD depend on ISO images.

This is just another attempt by MS to make us knuckle under and do things their way and their way ONLY. *******s.

I think it's also an attempt to make, er, "Unauthorised Copies of MS OSes" more difficult by not offering any disks at all that can be downloaded or traded. They forget that this is gonna happen regardless. The reason why it happens so much with MS OSes is BECAUSE it's locked up like a virgin wearing a chastity belt. You never see it happen to Apple OSes, cos Apple don't lock them down six ways from Sunday. Apple OS? Stick the disk in and do a clean install, 15 minutes later it's in (Except for iOS which now has MS-Style authorization and SIGNING). MS OS? ya gotta jump through all kinds of ritualistic and legalistic and religious hoops.

Forget about all of the system builders and developers who LEGITIMATELY require - That's REQUIRE - ISO Images and disks- And let's just make it more difficult for users whose OSes have developed problems that can ONLY be fixed from the Install Disk.

Jimbo - They are designing these POS OSes so that they absolutely REQUIRE internet connectivity. Screw the people that need Stand Alone OSes.

Yeah, you can get ISOs of the Preview, but Microsoft have said that there won't be ISOs for consumers of the full release of 8.1.

It's in the comments on this blog post:
Mark your calendars for Windows 8.1!

Brandon LeBlanc from Microsoft said:
Consumers will only be able to get Windows 8.1 for free through the Windows Store. ISO images won’t be made available broadly for consumers. For most consumers, the Windows Store is the easiest and most efficient route for updating a Windows 8 device to Windows 8.1.

I agree, with jimbo.

Microsoft have never made ISO's or Recovery DVD's for OEM manufacturer.

For the software generally, contact the manufacturer or installer for support options. Refer to the support number provided with the software. For updates and supplements obtained directly from Microsoft, Microsoft may provide limited support services as described at support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx. If you are using software that is not properly licensed, you will not be entitled to receive support services.
If you are seeking a refund, contact the manufacturer or installer to determine its return policy for a refund or credit. You must comply with that policy, which might require you to return the software with the entire computer on which the software is installed for a refund.

I think Support could be the key to why there won't be an ISO.

If you buy a new Windows 8 PC from an OEM today, then you should be able to get support from the OEM within the first year (or whatever the warranty period is), because they've sold you a product.

If you buy a Windows 8 upgrade from an earlier Windows edition, Microsoft take on an extra responsibility to provide some support, because they've sold you a product. And because you can use an ISO to totally wipe away the operating system, some people need that.

Along comes Windows 8.1, but if you had the option to upgrade via an ISO, you've lost the OEM build and you can mess up the PC totally. Some of what you lose is bloatware which people don't like, but you can also lose some things are very useful, such as the Factory Restore partition and extra function keys where the OEM provide you software to match the labels they put on the keyboard. If you lose the Factory Restore partition, and call the OEM for support when something goes wrong, their life is much trickier.

And don't forget that on October 17th 2013, every Windows 8 PC that was sold via consumer routes is less than a year old and most likely still under warranty in many countries, so people will expect support from their OEM.

You won't pay Microsoft anything for the 8 -> 8.1 upgrade, so Microsoft don't want to provide the extra support that they provide when they sell an upgrade.

Hence the lowest risk option for Microsoft, and probably to keep the OEMs happy as well, is to restrict it to updating via the Store, keeping all the OEM Factory Restore options, Function key mappings etc., but also all the bloatware.

I think one reason why there was an ISO released for the preview was so anyone could try it, even if you didn't have 8 already installed. That would also let you dual boot or run it in a VM. ISO's will show up in the wild at some point, likely shortly after they show up on TechNet or MSDN. The free updates though the store will have to accept your 8 product code. It likely just checks for a legally activated Windows 8 install. Disks made from an ISO, who knows?

Don't know what the future holds but this is the sort of thing that promotes piracy.

And no, I don't condone or support piracy, and have said so many times. I'm just pointing out that if there isn't general access to ISO's, people will be doing whatever they can to get one. And this place will be lit up with "illegal" posts asking for such files.

Bottom line is I see no reason to not offer an ISO. But... as I said, we don't know what the future is. Hopefully it includes ISO's.

Screw that! I'm sure I'll be able to get ISO from somewhere, I wont worry abotu it until it happens. I have no intention of installing 8,1 actually.

just say the word ,when they come out , and im sure you will find one ,hint, hint, lol

Hopefully it includes ISO's.

reread it ,not one serious work in my post !

Well I used an ISO I found to make an 8.1 VM. I was not impressed, I think 8 is better.

This is surely an idiotic, nonsense "policy" if there ever was one. After "8.1" ships, if Microsoft develops amnesia in terms of a stand-alone 8.0-8.1 patch, or an 8.1 ISO to replace the 8.0 ISO's we already have, then Microsoft is going to actually create a market schism native to its latest version of Windows--which is crazy beyond belief. You can't make kernel changes and other basic changes to Win8.0 and then try and support two separate flavors of Win8--8.0 and 8.1, in perpetuity. That's nuts...;)

Everybody understands that Microsoft wants to promote the Windows store. But what about the fact that people and businesses alike are used to and comfortable with both stand-alone OS service patches and the normal Windows Update mechanisms? WIndows store is not and cannot replace either of those distribution methods.

I do not see how Microsoft can do anything *but* a) offer an 8.0-8.1 service patch via Windows update, and b) offer an 8.1 ISO so that its customers can replace their current 8.0 ISOs with the 8.1 ISO--in addition to whatever it does through the Windows store. That is--IF Microsoft wants to make 8.1 the ongoing Win8 standard. If this is *not* what Microsoft wants to do with 8.1, then I'm prepared to sign the commitment papers on the company myself...!

I've never been NOT able to find what I've needed in ISO format. No ISO's being released really won't stop anything, people will just make them.

If MS wants to stop it, then they should not have activation cack in their OSes. People see that, and say screw it, find ways around it. Which was my point, nobody BOTHERS with Apple Stuff, because it never has that poop in it.

Except for iOS - It's restricted now, which makes what? THOUSANDS of people suddenly start working together and they bust it open. Which they would not do, if the OS was not so restricted. All Windows OSes and all regular Apple OSes can be modified all kinds of ways, but iOS is locked, so because the LOCK exists it must needs be picked.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
The other issue - Which is WAY more important than the legal or Ill aspects of any ISO images, is that in order for me to repair an OS I MUST HAVE the IOS image of that exact version of Windows.

MS not giving us what we need? Then we'll obtain it some other way, until they change this idiocy it will keep getting worse.
