Navigation pane jumps and folder tree collapses

Often, but not always, the navigation pane in file explorer makes quick up/down motions and in doing so collapses the folder tree in the Library section. As a result I cannot navigate in the left panel (navigation pane) of file explorer as I am not quick enough the click on a sub-folder before the tree collapses. I have the same problem when navigating an "open file" dialogue box which can make opening a file impossible. This happens mostly when disk activity is high such as when search is indexing or my virus scanner is doing its thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am using a desk top machine.

Turning off "expand to current folder" in the navigation pane should sort that for you.

It's in the Folder View Settings, pretty easy to set. It's one of the first things I set when installing Windows 8.

Thanks for your replies, unfortunately, your suggestion does not help. I had turned off windows search but activated it again after turning off "expand to current folder". Once windows search started up the problem I described above returned. Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

My message here was going to be...
I didn't do that correctly the first time so here is my little movie.
but..

Actually I would like to send the file (a zip file, 37,640kb) but the manage files window sits for 5 minutes or so with a message about sending request to the forums web-site until firefox times out with no file uploaded. As this is a completely different problem I will try later. For now take my word for it, the folder tree collapses when ever there is significant disk activity usually related to windows search indexer (now turned off) or McAfee doing a HD scan (which I dare not disable).

Yeah, that file size is way to large to upload here. ZIP files are limited to 8MB.
