Solved Programs not "un-minimising"

I purchased a new computer with Windows 8 about two months ago and it ran fine.
About one month ago when I tried to start Chrome it would appear down in the taskbar and that was it. If I point to the Chrome icon in the taskbar it displays a small picture above it showing my homepage but clicking on it does nothing and also Chrome is showing as running in task manager. It is like it is being forced to stay minimised.

Just today it has started doing it with Steam as well. I can run Steam and it just makes an icon appear on the taskbar. Any ideas how to stop Windows from doing this? Or to restore/maximise these programs?

Also try doing an alt-tab, see if you can get the restore to come up that way. But you should check for viruses, download TDSSKILLER and check also for Sirefef, ESET has a Sirefef checking and cleaning tool.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Thanks for the suggestions, I tried them all out.

"right click on the programs icon on the desktop or in start location ,and choose properties and check whats in the run box,"
It was showing as run as a normal window, I tried changing it to maximise and starting the program again but got the same result.

"You might see if you may be able to drag them back onscreen if they are somehow offscreen."
Right clicking on the thumbnail that appears just above the taskbar when I mouse over the icon and then clicking 'move' (or anything else) has no effect.

"Also try doing an alt-tab, see if you can get the restore to come up that way. But you should check for viruses, download TDSSKILLER and check also for Sirefef, ESET has a Sirefef checking and cleaning tool."
A thumbnail appears under Alt-tab but selecting it doesn't do anything.
TDSSKILLER and ESET didn't find any malware/viruses including Sirefef.

Please let me know if you have any more ideas.

Did you follow the steps in the tutorial?

Once you've clicked Move, you need to hit one of the arrow keys (this bit is important!) and then drag with the mouse.

If that doesn't work, try posting a screenshot of what you see when you click Move.

Wow, thank you David and Brink that did work!
It even gave me a fright when the window slid into view.

Cheers.

I have an Automotive program that likes to show images out-of-view, I have to drag them back all the time. The Program wants to remember the placement of the windows. You can use cCleaner to delete your folder size and location settings:

windowsizeloc.png

Download ccleaner, click that setting then run ccleaner and it will reset all of the Windows Location settings, then the next time you open it it should be in the middle.

The programs are starting in the correct place, but I'll keep that ccleaner in mind in case I ever run into that in the future.
