Reformatted Computer but can't access backed up folder

    Hello there,

Today I decided to reformat my laptop after it started to run slow. I backed up all my important folders onto an external hard drive and copied them back onto my fresh hard drive. Everything was fine until I tried to access one folder that I had shared on my previous account. It said that I did not have permission to access any file, but I cannot give myself permission because I reformatted my computer. I tried to go into the properties and give myself permission but it keeps telling me that I can't do it and I need the owner's permission. Is there anyway I can access these files or did I screw myself by not realizing I needed to give permission before reformatting?

    Thanks.

Can you right click it & choose Take Ownership ?

Hello Cutmore, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You would have to make your account the "owner" of the file/folder first, then you will be able to set permissions for it.

If you like, you could use the tutorial below to add "Take ownership" to the context menu to make it easier to do all of this from a simple right click on the file or folder.

Take Ownership - Add to Context Menu in Windows 8

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

So I got control of the the folder and changed the permissions, but its still denying me access. I started by right clicking the entire folder and taking control. I then proceeded to follow the advanced way of giving myself access by selecting my user and giving it access, but that didn't work. I then decided to give everyone access to see if that worked. Unfortunately, i've had no success.

    Any other recommendations?

    Thanks again.

Try disabling inheritance in Advanced options in Security Properties.
When the disable inheritance button is clicked in the popup window choose the top option to give implicit control to all users.

    Cutmore,

The file names in your screenshot above are green in color. This indicates that you have encrypted (EFS) them. Unless you have a backup of the EFS certificate to restore to gain access afterwards, you may be out of luck.

If you lost the EFS certificate backup, or do not have one, then you could see if the 30 day free trial of the Advanced EFS Data Recovery program may be able to decrypt the files.

Well, that explains a lot. Unfortunately, I did not back up necessary data. Is there an easy way of recovering the keys or am I done for?
