I set a lockscreen picture as a picture that I took, but it is no longer located on my computer (A friend thought it would be funny to delete it completely). I was wondering if the photo that I uploaded would be in a folder somewhere, or maybe on my windows account. I am running windows 8 64-bit

Hello SD, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You might see if you may be able to use the free program Recuva to try and recover the deleted file from the folder it was deleted from.

Hope this helps, :)

Normally when you select a custom lock screen background, you would choose an image saved on your PC for it to always work.

You could connect the camera or it's memory card to the PC to scan it with Recuva to see if it may still be able to recover it.

I am pretty sure this is where it would be located, at least it is located here on my system.

C:\Windows\Web\Screen

Hello Xunile,

That is the folder location of the default lock screen images. However, since SD used a custom image, it would normally be located where it was selected from instead.

SD, you might check in your Pictures library to see if it may have been imported there from the camera.

You could search the C:\ drive.

If it was .jpg use *.jpg in the search text-area.

or

*.png

*.bmp

*.gif

Whatever format it was.

Hello Brink :D,

If he still has the image as his lock screen wouldn't it have been saved at another location other than it's original place.
I might be misinterpreting his question, is the picture still used as his lock screen and he just wants to be able to do other things with the picture or was it deleted from his PC and isn't being used currently for his lock screen. I thought that maybe it cached the image once it was chosen as the lock screen background.

Usually, it will only reference the location of the actual image where it was selected from in the registry. If the image is removed from the location, I would think that it may no longer display on the lock screen.

I'm assuming that the image SD wants is no longer displaying.

I just recreated his scenario. I used a photo from my pictures folder as the lock screen background. I then deleted the photo from my pc. I went back to the lock screen and the image was still the lock screen background. I do think that Windows 8 caches the image by I don't know where yet.

I found the location of the cached images.

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\SystemData\S-1-5-18\ReadOnly

the exact sub-folder under systemdata might be different but i already confirmed that the image I used then deleted is cached at this location on my win8.1 pc.

The only problem is it is difficult to actually access the folder, access is denied without changing permissions for the folders. if you really need a copy of the picture it might be best to use a linux live cd to copy the image so as not to risk hosing your system by messing with permissions.

I found where Windows 8 caches the current custom lock screen image below.

The image is saved in the hidden LockScreen_A (the letter A will vary since each custom image is assigned a new letter in alphabetical order) system folder below. The S-1-5-21.... folder in red below will vary since it's an unique number per user account on each PC.

Code:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\SystemData\[COLOR=#ff0000][B]S-1-5-21-1548349096-1714626614-977834776-1001[/B][/COLOR]\ReadOnly\LockScreen_A
I set this door image as my lock screen, then deleted it, and still showed on my lock screen.

lock_screen.jpg

To be able to open and see the image in the folder above, you will need to:

1. Take ownership (option three) of the SystemData folder, and apply to containing folders by checking the Replace owner of subcontainers and objects box.

2. Click on OK until out of Properties.

EDIT:
LOL, looks like we both found it.

It may be a reduced in size version of the original. Did you have any other copied there? How about at the location we posted above?
