Lockscreen Photo Location

  1. #11

I found the location of the cached images.

    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\SystemData\S-1-5-18\ReadOnly

the exact sub-folder under systemdata might be different but i already confirmed that the image I used then deleted is cached at this location on my win8.1 pc.

The only problem is it is difficult to actually access the folder, access is denied without changing permissions for the folders. if you really need a copy of the picture it might be best to use a linux live cd to copy the image so as not to risk hosing your system by messing with permissions.

I found where Windows 8 caches the current custom lock screen image below.

The image is saved in the hidden LockScreen_A (the letter A will vary since each custom image is assigned a new letter in alphabetical order) system folder below. The S-1-5-21.... folder in red below will vary since it's an unique number per user account on each PC.

    Code:
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\SystemData\S-1-5-21-1548349096-1714626614-977834776-1001\ReadOnly\LockScreen_A
I set this door image as my lock screen, then deleted it, and still showed on my lock screen.

To be able to open and see the image in the folder above, you will need to:

    1. Take ownership (option three) of the SystemData folder, and apply to containing folders by checking the Replace owner of subcontainers and objects box.

    2. Click on OK until out of Properties.

    EDIT:
LOL, looks like we both found it.

I found the location (C:\Users\sd144\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\LockScreen_B) but when i save it, it is blurry... it was 1080pClick image for larger version

It may be a reduced in size version of the original. Did you have any other copied there? How about at the location we posted above?
