Windows Media Player (server execution failed)

Has anyone found a fix for this. Found several "fixes" including one from Microsoft search but nothing works. Uninstalled and reinstalled media center/media player through control panel but no change.

When I request windows to open a video file with a right click and ask it to use windows media player I get the "server execution failed"

Lenovo All In One B320 windows 8 pro.

VLC works and may be my answer

It may be that WMP can't hack the codec of the video file.

On the other hand, it's probably trying to launch the Server, to shut it off, try this - Should work for Windows 8:

It may be as simple as this though, give it a try:

Server execution failed? WMP - Windows 7 Help Forums

Simple restart the Windows Media Sharing Service, then reboot.

It has happened to me too, and it IS annoying, but upon trying again it worked (without even rebooting). In my case it seems to happen if I open a music file short after closing another one. I don't know, maybe one should wait a few seconds? It didn't happen in similar situations in the past though (with Vista for example).

This problem has existed all the way back to XP and XP MCE. Lets see if those solutions do them any good.

Have tried many things over the weeks, most of what was suggested above. Ran across the below instructions from one of the links I found somewhere and it worked! Have no idea what it did but it works :-) THANKS all of you!

    1. Click Start, click Accessories, the right click on Command Prompt and choose "run as administrator", then type regsvr32 jscript.dll, and then hit enter.
    2. Now type exit and hit enter. Now try media player and it should work.

Don't know why that would have worked, good to know. Maybe WMP uses javascript to run. Glad you got it fixed!

However, when I reboot wmp goes back to the non-working status until I use the "regsvr32 jscript.dll" command again.

So, will try further to see if there might be a permanent fix without doing a command line now and then though that would not be all that terrible.

And you tried shutting off the Sharing Service too? Try both at once

Just tried that, shut off the server service and left it in manual, did the command line, rebooted and lost wmplayer.
