Would be heavier for the system though: only 2GB RAM; divide it wisely.

In many cases, the hardware drivers are baked right into the operating system itself. When I install Windows 8 on many of our laptops, there are usually only a few devices in device manager which even require a driver). Chances are good that thinks like networking and audio are just going to work under Windows 8, or 8.1 for that matter.

Partition on a Virtual Disk will use real disk space: whole disk will be a file in this case. The virtual OS will use RAM as well. You will have to try between 512MB and 1GB for the Virtual machine (in VirtualBox) and the rest of the RAM, respectively 1.5GB - 1GB for the main (host) OS which is Win7 in your case.

If you install it as the main OS, partition will use disk space, RAM will be almost as much as in Win7 but you said there are problems with drivers so you decide what path you take. I wouldn't rush it until the 8.1 final release in October so try it in VirtualBox first.

I run Windows 8 in VMware Player. I find that more convenient than Virtual Box which I have used for years.

One of my versions is on an external SSD which I can attach and run on any of my systems. Runs super with USB3 and acceptable with USB2. But my systems have 4, 6 or 8GBs of RAM. I would not recommend to do that on a 2GB RAM system because you should have at least 2GBs of RAM for the host and 2GBs for the guest.

The beauty of VMware Player is that the whole virtual partition ends up in one folder - that usually ends up in Documents. That folder you can move/copy to any disk (internal or external) and run it from there.

Yes Wolfgang, I've seen the differences as well.
However, Markus here has 32bit host and VMWare Player cannot be installed there (only version 3.1.6 which doesn't support Windows 8).

If the CPU has x64 and AMD-V, using an x64 host will be the best way to start all this testing.

I am a Windows enthusiast like someone stated early on in this topic. I enjoy learning the latest, so I can find out if it'll be beneficial to my peers to learn. I'm a student involved in Cisco Networking. It helps to learn all the latest kinks and bugs when upgrading. Our current network uses Windows 7, but we're looking to expand a few computers into Windows 8/8.1 so our students can learn those as well.

I, personally, made the change to Windows 8 because Windows 7 was much too like Vista/XP/2000. I needed something new to work with. Which is why I made the change. I'm glad I did because I thoroughly enjoy it. It was a trip and a half trying to learn everything in Windows 8, and I'm still not done yet! Plus, my school is wanting to add a Windows 8 course, and if I'm knowledgable enough, I can get the job while being a student! :)

So i can´t run Windows 8.1?

EDIT:I have to partion or use VMware?

AS a Techgeekhead, I always want The Latest. But I also want The Greatest. Windows 8.1 is not The Greatest, not by a longshot. I like 8, I'll keep it until the real 8.1 shows up. Then I'll make a unilateral decision based on what I find.

    Other Info
Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I'm not brave enought to try anything still in BETA.. I'll be awating the full release in October 2013,
then I'll give them time to work more bugs out before I will actually up-date to 8.1 for my Windows 8, laptop.
