Anybody else tired of hearing these lame Win 8 complaints?

Virtually everyday I run across a post in a forum or a news article that complains about Win 8 and how the user does not want a phone/tablet OS on their desktop/laptop. IMO, this complaint is totally without merit.

I don't understand why those people can't accept that it is a DUAL PURPOSE OS, for those that want to use the features that are phone/tablet like they are there to be used or for those that prefer the desktop, it's available too. It's very similar to having a dual boot setup except that you don't need to reboot in order to switch between the two interfaces.

Instead of whining about it, accept that the two interfaces are there and deal with it. I use my Win 8 laptop everyday using the desktop and have not encountered any issues with that, Win 8 is like a very capable OS. I can switch back and forth between my desktop with Win 7 and my laptop with Win 8 and run the same suite of apps on both. For those that absolutely need the Start button, there are 3rd party apps that can be applied to bring it back.

Then there are those that whine that Win 8 is unusable on a non-touch screen. Baloney! I have been using Win 8 since the first customer preview on various machines, none of which have a touch screen and it is perfectly usable with a mouse/keyboard (yes, even the Start screen). I have never owned a computer with a touchscreen (and probably never will) but have tried them in stores and find that, instead of making things easier, the touchscreen makes using the OS laborious due to having to constantly lift my arm and make gross arm movements instead of making small hand movements to accomplish the same thing with a mouse.

My only real complaint with Win 8 is the "Metro" or "Modern" apps. I personally haven't found one of these apps that I would want to use on a daily basis so, instead of whining about it, I simply don't use any of them.

I agree wholeheartedly, with one correction! I think you could say it is a tri purpose OS - with or without touchscreen. If a user only wants to be in the desktop mode, it isn't a fantastic improvement from Windows 7, but certainly not worth all the whining.

Yes. I tell those that ask my advice that Win 8 isn't a compelling upgrade from Win 7 but there's also no reason to avoid buying a new computer that comes with it.

I use metro: ie, netflix, news, iheart radio, weather, daily motion, vevo, FilmOn Live TV, etc ... every day.

... and newegg, mahjong, minesweeper, music maker jam, pinball fx2 and toms hardware occasionally.

At this point, with the 8.1 Preview, Netflix will not launch a video in ie 11 on the desktop, one must use the metro app. My experience anyway.

I prefer running YouTube and Netflix type of services in FireFox from the desktop. The web page of both those services is much more user friendly and usable than the apps are.

Yes, just preference. I like the metro app full screen focus and auto pause when doing something else. Our experience (and preference) is different. Windowing video or game apps is annoying to me, ... when I launch a video, my preference is to do one thing at a time (watch the video). It is still possible to snap a video app (or other app) and continue to do something on the desktop.

If I watch a video, I usually go full screen anyway. What about those lame complaints?

Everything just works better from the Desktop anyway, all browsers work better. For instance, if yo use the IE Tile, and you want to add a photo, it brings up the Start Screen search, instead of File Explorer, and it's LAME. I can't FIND what I'm looking for my pressing the first letter of the filename like I can do in Explorer. So to hell with it, I don't use the IE tile anymore. I don't use the Chrome tile either, same complaint. I'd rather not switch from being able to find the things I need to attach to NOT being able to find the things I want to attach. Or, download locations, I don't always use the Download folder, I like to choose the location sometimes. The Tile versions of Browsers will not let me do that as easily. If I can find a way to totally remove Metro I will.

Not to mention there is NOT one app that can increase my productivity. Ironically, I have about ten iOS apps that can connect right to my PC and manipulate files on it, even stream video straight over. There are none of these for Windows 8. VLC? Nope, not for Windows 8 Tile. But there are plenty of fake apps that cost 10 bucks apiece and not worth the time to install them or the money.

Your preference, ok. A windowed browser must be minimized or resized to run something else usually, and zoom factors can vary. On the desktop, one must always move, resize or minimize a browser to multitask.

For instance, if you use the IE Tile, and you want to add a photo, it brings up the Start Screen search, instead of File Explorer, and it's LAME. I can't FIND what I'm looking for my pressing the first letter of the filename like I can do in Explorer.

The start screen search is for apps, not files. It has been updated in 8.1

With 8.1, you are one step closer. You can disable the top corners (edge UI and charms) with navigation options, and all corners with classic shell and others. Auto boot to desktop, the Winkey brings up whatever start menu you like.

The start screen can also be disabled (not used) in navigation options.

The amount of grievous problems I've seen with 8.1 will keep me running 8 for a while.

I'm saying, when you are in a Webpage on Tile IE10. You want to upload an image, so you clock in "Browse for File" - THAT's the search I'm talking about. It's bad, very bad. It will bring up your 'Documents" folder in a blue area above the Web Page Frame. It is VERY difficult to find what you are looking for, because 1) The tiles are all the same size and can't be changed 2) they are not laid out like they are in Explorer, so even if you know the exact name of the file, it's VERY hard to find.
'
I'd make a screenshot, but I don't wanna go back to IE10 tile, it took 15 minutes to set it up so it worked like that. It only takes seconds to make it work as a tile in Chrome, you hit "Relaunch Chrome in Windows 8 Mode" and BOOM it opens up instantly.

You seem to be looking at it from a purely personal perspective.

For some of us, it is a discussion about marketing, or if you like, the world at large. Here we can see some very major shifts in an important industry. It is fascinating to watch what the players are doing. It is also interesting to see how little most people understand, and how big corporations try and manipulate the consumers.

I still am having trouble convincing people to give 8 a try, they don't understand that the desktop is still there, when they look at the Tiles-> they run! Then they ask me to install Windows 7.

But as far as I'm concerned, I love Windows 8, the desktop - It's a huge improvement for me despite losing the transparency. I hate to say but most people are like me, they have no use for the Start Screen.

Now, I realize there is that "Split Screen" mode where you can have two tiles running at once, but that's not enough. If we are to get full use of Tile apps, then these tiles should stay TSR until shut down. When I move from one to the other, I should not have to wait for them to reload each time.

what are the major number of complaints?

Touchscreen interface.

Yet, the system runs fine and is perfectly usable with Keyboard and Mouse and touch
Most people I have talk to have heard how horrible Win8 is, but haven't even given it much more than a glance
because of that, Win8 has gotten a bad rap from others who just don't like it, or don't want to like it.

There is no good reason not to buy a PC with Win8 on it. Not one good reason.

You can just as easily say, The vast majority of people don't actually know if they want a PC (Windows Laptop or Tablet) with touch or not.

Is's not though. I have hundreds of items in each of my Library folders. That search screen is ridiculous, I can do it quicker from the Desktop and File Explorer.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.

I don't see the difficulty. Maybe because it's easy for me.

Is's not though. I have hundreds of items in each of my Library folders. That search screen is ridiculous, I can do it quicker from the Desktop and File Explorer.

Because that is what you are use to. It's what you have been doing for years.
Think about it... if things went the other way, you would be saying the same thing. I can say, that is a fact.
Try doing it with the interface for a couple of years only and then come back and say how you feel. I can say with confidence, you won't. Or, you will say it doesn't matter, cause you learned the new way of doing it and it works just fine for you.

Because by that time, that is what you will be used to doing.

It has a lot less to do with the interface and everything with what we are used to.

I can understand why they might find it a challenge.

Tile apps do stay in memory, if one has not disabled the edge UI, they can be multitasked.

Are questions complaints?

I would love to use the Modern/Metro interface exclusively.
But it is not, nor do I believe it will EVER BE ready for prime time.

Let me pose a question about a simple OS task using the Modern interface.

How do I browse hidden folders?

Answers anyone???

Didn't think so :(

So when the answers to these simple BASIC questions are....IT CAN'T BE DONE,
complaints follow. The main 'complaint?' being....don't release ALPHA software.
The Modern interface is ALPHA software....thus far.

Modern/Metro should not have shipped [or should have shipped separately as a tablet OS]
until it mirrored the feature set of the Desktop OS.

I've no complaints about 8 Desktop OS or Blue Desktop OS, other than the
deprecation of some of the older features that shipped with Windows 7.

Microsoft did a great job on the DESKTOP OS.

I was called over by my neighbor over the weekend because her home desktop PC had been having some issues and she knew that I worked on computers for a living.

Long story short, I believe that her computer had been hit by some drive by malware and it wreaked havoc on the system in general. She ended up taking it to a local computer shop who diagnosed her with a failing hard drive as well as so many problems with Windows that a reinstall of the OS was in order. She went ahead and did this, and when she had problems immediately after getting home she called me over.

So, in talking with her, she was offered Windows 8 by the computer shop, but she declined as she had "read so many bad things about it". This is pretty sad, as she doesn't really know much about computers at all, and the computer shop didn't try to argue with her quick assessment at all. Instead, they went ahead and installed "vista" back onto the machine...which is what it had right from the factory.

So, while many of us might be tired of hearing about what consumers want and what they don't want...the bottom line is that Microsoft is missing out on sales because of perception. As I explained to my neighbor, with a few key changes you could make Windows 8 look and run just like 7 (or Vista). But even then, there are aspects that some might find annoying, like some settings in the Charms bar with other settings in the Control Panel. These complaints, to me, are justifiable since they do impact the users and so many do seem to care about them.

At the end of the day, I think Windows 8 is a solid system, but I don't remotely use it in it's tablet-esque form, and I don't utilize Metro at all. I've taken measures to work around those "features". Whenever I discuss Windows 8 with friends, family, etc...It's always "windows 8 is fine, but.....". It's always explained with a laundry list of exceptions...so it's far from exceptional as far as I am concerned. I used to wholeheartedly recommend Windows 7 without question.
