Mike, i had that problem also. Went to the APPS menu, looked for File Explorer, pinned it to Start, then from Start to the desktop.

Do not recall if i could pin it to the desktop from APPS menu directly.

    That took care of it.

Do not ask me what happened.

    Jeff

Your problem might be due to incompatible shell extensions. Please have a look at this thread:

Thanks, but would that have anything to do withthe fact that not all icons are appearing when enteringthe file explorer? This is getting really frustrating.I ahve done the DISM, Sfc /scannow, etc no ossues found. No virus's, nothing. WTF!!!!?

By looking at the screen shot you posted in the other thread. Some of the items on the left navigation pane are missing ie. Computer, Network etc...

The problem might be more serious than we thought and I am suspecting your registry database is corrupted which dism, sfc etc... will not find it. Let us try to download CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download and run the registry scan to see if it helps.

    Good luck !!!

Yes, I've done that. Same.cleaned the registry and nothing. Any other suggestions?

Every time I do a "registry clean" one or more of my softwarte intallations need to be reinstalled. Which is annoying, but like I said, I used the registry cleaner from Ccleaner but everything is the same. This is killing me! I do not want to refresh anything either, considering I have a lot of software in which I no longer have the keys. So if there is a better way i'm open to it. No one has seen this before?

What I mean by saying your registry database is corrupted was even it is clean but was modified.

I would suggest you download a trial version of Windows 8 Manager from Optimize Windows, Tweak Windows, Repair Windows, Clean Windows, Speed Up Windows - Yamicsoft
and use the Repair Center option to see if it fixes your problem.

So far so good after installing and running that Windows 8 Manager. It did, as expected, mess up some softeware installations that require a uninstall/reinstall. But I didn't see the issue since. I would like to see the windows 8 manager give a log file of all actions that were fixed. I am sure it's there, just not sure where.

Most of the repairs that Windows 8 Manager did were to reset the registry database to its corrected values so I am not sure if there's a log file for you to look at. However it's good to hear that at least it did fix the problem.

Note: Do not run all the repairs, just go thru each item and run the repair related to your problem.
