Problem with monitor

Hello, recently my monitor stopped responding after being turned off (after 15 minutes). It didn't happen before.
I don't know what to do. Should I disable turning off the monitor altogether? I lose all my work when this happens because the only way to get the laptop working again is to press the power button which restarts the computer although the settings are actually that it should go into hibernation when I press the power button, which it does if the display is working, but if it stops responding it restarts the laptop. No other keys work or do anything when this happens.
Any advice?

It sounds like its more than just the monitor not turning back on. It sounds like your PC/Windows is locking up. Check device manger for anything with a yellow ! after it.

I just checked and there is a yellow ! next to the printer (WIA). Upon turning on the printer, a new one without the yellow ! appeared, so I uninstalled the one with the yellow !. Hopefully this solved the problem!

I'd be surprised if that was causing the PC to lock up. You'll just have to wait and see.

try disabling the turn monitor off after 15min power option and see if the computer has any problems with it off , try it like that for a week ,if it doesn't freeze /lock up then you know its the monitor

Printers not configured correctly CAN cause a poopload of problems, if the yellow vanished when turning it on, maybe that's what it needed. Keep us posted.

    Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I am keeping an eye on it... It didn't happen again yesterday, but usually it seemed to happen after restarting from hibernation and after restarting from hibernation today I have been working non-stop. Later today though I will have the chance to leave it on without doing anything for more than 15 minutes, so we will see what happens. :)

It is still working.... :D Maybe it was really the printer. I also had a 4-port USB hub connected when it happened, but nothing was attached to it and at any rate USB selective suspend is enabled in the power settings, so it shouldn't cause any problems?

Nope, that's the right setting. It may have been the 4-port hum. I use an 8-port USB hub, but it has to be plugged in. But my HP Printer causes me problems. Caused me problems, the Ink System broke.

Right now the hub is plugged in, so we will see if it causes any problem when the display is turned off... It didn't cause any problems in the past, so it was probably really the printer (I did have a problem with the printer more or less at the time when the problem with the monitor started to occur). It is funny, as the printer was not even connected, but maybe the laptop just didn't like that problem in the device manager...

If it is a Hub that needs to be plugged into power, that's better than one that just plugs in and takes power from the USB port. If a printer also has Card Readers on it, sometimes those can stall the boot process a bit, especially if they have cards in them. I've had the most problems with Epson and HP printers. brothers and canon not so much.
