Solved Change of Computer Name not being updated in Devices

Hello,

After installing Windows 8, I decided that I wanted to change my computer name. I followed the instructions online and changed it through Advanced System Settings. However, the old computer name keeps on showing up in Devices under Devices and Printers. I have looked at other posts in this forum

http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/28266-computer-name-devices-printers.html

and my

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ComputerName

shows up the correct name. After searching through the Registry Editor, I have found that the following entry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\AllUserInstallAgent\S-1-5-21-699933474-1405474040-4259847413-1001

is keeping the old computer name. What shall I do?

I am running Windows 8 OEM on a MacBook Pro Retina Display running Bootcamp. All updates have been installed. Symantec and Dropbox are the only software that I have installed in Windows.

Any help is very much appreciated. Thank you!

Well, for some reason, after about 5 or 6 reboots --due to the fact that I was switching back and forth between the Windows and OS partitions-- the change of name actually happened. The old computer name still appears in the above mentioned Registry Editor entry but the computer appears with its new name in Devices under Devices and Printers. So, issue solved, I guess. Thank you.

Welcome to Windows EightForums, serres.

I was on my phone app yesterday when I read your problem. I'm glad things worked out.

Just curious if your PC sign-in is a MS account? They have "trusted PCs" listed there.

Hi HippsieGypsie,

Thank you for your reply. No, my sign-in is not a MS account; it's a regular stand alone Username and Password set up at the time of installing Windows.

Hope this helps; thank you!

Sometimes the name is taken from the BIOS and can't be changed. Someone else had a similar problem, could not get it resolved, name kept going back to "Dell, Inc" despite changing it 20 times. An OEM puter really wants the name field to be filled in with it's own info.

I was wondering if it had anything to do with "trusted devices" within a MS account sign-in.

Thanks for replying. :)

All a part of "brain burning" I would guess. :D
