Office is usually not activated ever- If it were an actual part of the package, yo would have been given documentation for it with a serial number/Key - AND it would probably have been activated from the start - But I've worked on hundreds of brand new PCs and they never just GIVE you Office.

it also has an option for ONE year of trial...if i go for the trial, and LATER I figure out the key, does the trial nullify the activated version even though you might later find the key?

I would imagine the student versions give you about 180 days of use. Even the pro version of Office 2010 works in clumps of 180 days, and needs to be reactivated after that. Usually you can just re-arm it.
